Ocr'd Text:
In the summer of 1962 Mr. and Mrs. Herman C. Krannert indicated their intention of making a major gift to the University of Illinois. After meeting with University President David D. Henry, they decided that their gift should fund units of a performing arts complex which had long been desired by the University. This building is the result. The Center is intended as a unified concept where music, opera, theatre, and the dance can operate both in training and performance as interrelated and complementary to one another, bringing these arts close together both for performers and for audiences. As we open this spring, we are in our infancy. There is much to be done before we can grow to the full potential that this unique struc- ture offers as a training facility and as a cultural Center, where standard works, new works, and experimentation in all fields of the performing arts can flourish side by side. We hope that the Krannert Center's varied activities will catch the imagination and merit the support of the University community and of the community of the Twin Cities. We hope to attract visitors from far afield and to become a landmark for the performing arts in the heart of the Middle West. JOHN BURRELL

An Evening with Fanny Kemble Fanny Kemble (1809-1893) starred at Covent Garden at the age of twenty and proved herself to be one of the truly great actresses of her day. More important to us, however, is her writing. During her long and colorful life, she was tremendously involved with people and with history. She wrote passionately about nearly everything with which she was con- cerned and, since her intimates were the political, social, literary, and theatrical giants of her time, Miss Kemble's letters and journals provide a dramatic footnote to history. Miss Kemble knew the problems and oppressions of slavery first hand. At the age of twenty-five she left a brilliant career on the British stage to become the wife of a Georgia plantation owner. Years later, unable to live with the torment of the slavery around her, she divorced her husband and returned to the stage. Her writings reflect the frustrations of an abolitionist in the pre-Civil-War South. AN EVENING WITH FANNY KEMBLE is the result of years of re- search by Eugenia Rawls, who discovered many of Fanny Kemble's un- published writings. Some of the material in tonight's presentation comes from Miss Kemble's published work, but much of it is from private letters. The work also contains pertinent comments from Miss Kemble's most illustrious contemporaries. Eugenia Rawls is a star performer in her own right, having appeared on Broadway in leading roles with Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, Tallulah Bankhead, Helen Hayes, and José Ferrer. She has also made several appearances on national television. THERE WILL BE ONE 15 MINUTE INTERMISSION. Please retain your ticket stub, as it may be checked during intermission. The taking of photographs during performances is strictly prohibited. FOR Dean, Direct Chair Actin STAFF Direc Produ Busin Sceni Light Audio Techi Produ Build Publi Adve Publi
