84 THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA The University of Illinois and the entire state are justly proud of the University of Illin Symphony Orchestra, a student group acknowledged to be equal or superior to m professional organizations of its kind. Under the expert and sensitive baton of Profe Bernard Goodman, the Orchestra's reputation for polished performances has spe throughout the nation. Membership in the Orchestra is open to any University student on the Urbana-Champai campus who, through competitive audition, can meet or ultimately achieve the requi level of musical proficiency. Last year, in addition to the annual tour throughout the midwest and their regular se of on-campus concerts, the Orchestra presented programs in conjunction with the Us versity Composers' Exchange; with Leonard Rose, the internationally acclaimed cell and for the Music Teachers National Association convention. They also perform Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the University of Illinois Oratorio Society. This yea in addition to their regular tour, the Orchestra will perform with various soloists on Star Course series. During the past several years, the University of Illinois Symphony Orchestra membe have had the educational advantage of intensive symposia sessions with international famous conductors. This series of guest conductors has included such personnel a Enesco, Hindemith, Stravinsky, Kubelik, Stokowski, Ansermet, Hillis, and Sir Thoma Beecham. The Orchestra has recorded several long-playing records, included in the School d Music's custom recording series. PIANO SOLOIST Soulima Stravinsky, concert pianist, was born in Lausanne, Switzerland. He has studied piano and composition in Paris at the Ecole Normale de Musique and under such emines teachers as Alfred Cortot, Isidore Philipp, and Nadia Boulanger. He came to the Unit States in 1948 and has appeared with the major orchestras throughout this country and Canada. Mr. Stravinsky is widely recognized as one of the foremost intepreters of Mozart and Scarlatti. He is also the foremost exponent of the piano music of his father, the no composer, Igor Stravinsky. Since 1950 Mr. Stravinsky has been a permanent member of the music faculty at t University of Illinois. However, in the past decade he has toured Europe, as well North and South America as a piano soloist and lecturer. THE CONDUCTOR Bernard Goodman, conductor of the orchestra, is also violinist with the world-fam Walden String Quartet. Professor Goodman received his academic training at Western Reserve University and Cleveland Institute of Music, from 1932 to 1935. He taught instrumental music in Cleveland public schools, and was violinist with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra has been violinist with the Walden String Quartet since its organization in 1934. P fessor Goodman was artist-in-residence and assistant professor at Cornell University 1946-47 and has been professor of music at the University of Illinois since 1947. wind Quintet. Upon completion of his Master of Music degree at the University Professor Charles DeLaney, assistant to the conductor, is also flutist in the Faculty Wo Colorado, he obtained the Virtuoso degree from the Conservatory of Lausanne, Swi land.
