BMS CELEBRITY CONCERTS
1996-1997
Ocr'd Text:
Introduction
Once again BMS has arranged an interesting and varied programme of artists and music for
1996-1997. These are pianists Peter Donohoe and Young-Choon Park, guitarist Julian Bream, the
Emperor String Quartet, the Lowbury Piano Trio, Fretwork with countertenor Robin Blaze (in
association with Belfast Festival at Queen's), London Winds directed by Michael Collins, and tenor
Ian Bostridge accompanied by Roger Vignoles.
Five of these concerts will be held at the Elmwood Hall and three at the new Waterfront 'Studio'.
Please note that the ticket prices for these two venues differ.
The changing nature of our audience in the past few years has at last laid to rest the myth that the
BMS is a form of private music club. All BMS concerts are open to everyone. In our 76th year we
hope that the artists will receive the public support they so richly deserve and that our audiences
will enjoy what promises to be one of our most exciting seasons of Celebrity Concerts.

INTRODUCTORY LECTURES O
Last season the Institute of Continuing Education at Queen's University held a series of lectures, each
lecture introducing the music to be heard at the Celebrity Concert the following Saturday. The venture
was so successful that a similar series is to be provided relating to the music to be played this season.
For details of these evening lectures please contact the Institute of Continuing Education, or consult
their Autumn/Winter Brochure.

included will be a year-by-year look at the BMS with names of artists, locations used, subscription

Peter Donohoe was born in Manchester, studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and in Paris with Yvonne Loriod,
wife of the eminent composer, the late Olivier Messiaen. Since his success at the 1983 International Tchaikovsky
Competition in Moscow, Peter Donohoe has developed a distinguished career in Europe, the USA and the Far East.
'Donohoe is a pianist in a class of his own, an interpreter with a quite extraordinary feeling for the musical phrasing, a
'sculptor' at the piano ... his relentlessly clear representation of thematic conflicts brings the drama to life.'

Programme
Aprogramme of consort and vocal music by composers such as Byrd, Holborne,
Purcell, Gibbons, Jenkins, W. Lawes, Jenkins and Bevin, and ending with a new
work by Elvis Costello. This work 'Put Away Forbidden Playthings' was
commissioned by the South Bank Centre in 1995 as one of a series of reflections

Fretwork, who made their Wigmore Hall debut in 1986, have established
themselves internationally 'as a leading force in early music and as a vibrant
inspiration to contemporary composers. The four violists will be joined by
countertenor Robin Blaze who made such a great impression at BMS during the
1994-1995 season when he sang with the Chandos Baroque Players.
'It is hard to imagine consort playing of greater refinement or subtlety than this'.
