CHAIRMAN'S INTRODUCTION
by Leonard Pugh OBE
As you will probably have gathered by now, the 1995/96 Season of
Celebrity concerts marks the 75th year of the Belfast Music Society.
Founded 'pre-BBC' the Society now faces the challenge of 'post-Classic
FM' and all that this means in a rapidly-changing musical world. We may
sometimes weary of constant change but we cannot stem the flow of
what society in general regards as progress.
Public expectancy has changed in almost every respect and none more
so than in musical events and the standards of programme content and
presentation. (Even 'BMS on Ice' would now be old-hat!) Nothing can
adequately replace the sharing of live performances of music. For as long
as there is a need for social contact between human beings there will be a
need for a musical environment such as that provided by the BMS.
We hope you will join with us in this our Anniversary Year which has been planned with something of an Irish
flavour. We also hope that you will help us to ensure - on your behalf and for future generations - our greater
longevity by becoming either a Subscriber and/or a Friend or a fairly regular supporter.

ber musician. Philippe Cassard, winner of the first prize at the first

This event brings together two leading Irish musicians.
Ingrid Surgenor, who hails from Belfast, is one of our leading
accompanists - a regular with the Cardiff Singer of the World -
while Suzanne Murphy, who began her studies with Veronica Dunn
in Dublin, has established a reputation for her performances of
major roles in operas by Verdi, Puccini and Bellini.
Their programme offers a vocal journey from the songs of Haydn,
Schumann (both his and hers) to the Lieder of Brahms, Wolf and
Strauss with a little French leavening from Ravel.

In 1994 this prize-winning quartet undertook an extensive tour of the UK which was preceded by a
highly successful British debut at the Wigmore Hall in 1993.
Their programme of music by Mozart, Webern and Smetana will take us on a gentle journey through
classical, early 20th century music and the music of their fellow countryman of yesteryear, Bedřich Smetana.

Arnon Erez is a soloist in his own right and has played as recital-
ist, concerto artist and chamber musician.
Two 20th century works are included in addition to music by
Schubert and Beethoven. Viennese-born composer Kurt Roger
had strong ties with Belfast and the performance of his Sonata is
awaited with interest as also will be Bartók's Rhapsody No. 1

'One discovers a quality in them which is rarely found on the concert stage: that of experiencing a
vibrant pleasure in playing an instrument and communicating this feeling to the listener.'
Recognition of the brilliant and unique artistry of these pianists is reflected in a growing number of
important orchestral debuts in their respective home countries of Canada and the USA. They have
now established themselves as one of the leading piano duos on the concert scene.
On this return visit to Northern Ireland, Markham and Broadway bridge the gap between St. Anthony
(the Chorale) and Don Juan (the opera) with two delightful works, the Fantasy in F minor for piano
duet by Schubert and the Sonata written in 1918 by Poulenc.
