FLUTE QUARTET in C major, K285b Allegro apa Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) edT bas Thema (Andante) con variazioni iqqo Iduob bwoddot doin ons opsJJA Mozart's solo wind works present many problems for the editor, since in many cases the autograph manuscript has disappeared. To cut a long and involved (though interest- ing!) story short, it is considered most likely that the Allegro of this quartet was composed by Mozart at least as far as bar 158, but probably completed by another hand, and that the second movement was arranged by someone other than Mozart from the variation movement of the Wind Serenade, K361. Such arrangements were of course very common at the time to facilitate more performances of a piece. The Allegro is a straightforward sonata form move- ment, and the Andante is followed by six variations of which the fourth is in the minor and the fifth is marked Adagio. background music. The Entrata, as its name suggests, imitates trumpet calls. The second movement is a minuet with two trios. The Allegro molto is a ternary piece in D minor with a short coda. The G major Andante illustrates Beethoven's enrichment of the light texture by means of double-stopping; there are three variations and a coda. Allegro scherzando which follows is a Beethovenian scherzo. sdd The The last movement is the most substantial, if that is the right word, and is preceded by a slow introduction. 'Disinvolto' means 'jaunty' or 'unconstrained'. The former meaning perhaps characterises the main theme of this rondo, the latter the hectic coda. doub s to soona ******************** i sds INTERVAL revca mot stanna be TO? SHALL BE TIME NO LONGER; but in the days of the trumpet of the seventh angel, the mystery of God shall be finished". (Revelation, 10, 1-7) The circumstances of this work's composition are al- most more well-known than the music itself. Suffice it to say that the combination of instruments for which it is scored, violin, clarinet, cello and piano, derives from ent the fortuitous availability of performers on these instru- ments during Messiaen's imprisonment in Stalag VIII-A during the last war, Messiaen himself being the pianist. the last war, Messiaen himse has wola ing the pla As with many of Messiaen's works, his particular brand of Catholic mysticism plays a profound part in the quartet's symbolism. Apparent also is the influence of bird-song, of which he has made a life-long study, plainchant and oriental music. Style and philosophy merge in Messiaen: his rhythmic patterns produce music which is athletic yet without move- ment; his harmonies form shifting colours without progressing. (AND THERE SHALL BE TIME NO LONGER). Amongst 20th century composers his music is uniquely communicative. As he him- self has said "it is enough to listen to the music", though he might have added that we must not expect his music to develop or progress in the classical manner. 1. Formed in 1976 from students at the Royal Academy of Music, LONTANO has established itself as one of the fore- most groups specialising in 20th century music. The number of players can vary from one or two to fourteen or eighteen, allowing considerable diversity in the repertory. Lontano has figured prominently in BBC Radio 3's "Music in our Time" series, and has toured widely in England and Wales, France, Germany and Eastern Europe. Plans for the group now extend into the mid-1980's. The group's director, Odaline de la Martinez, was born in Cuba in 1949, and studied at the RAM (1972-6). She is also a composer with performances at Montreux, Istanbul, Hawaii, New York, London and elsewhere to her credit. **************** NEXT RECITAL Monday, 29 November, 7.30 p.m. Members' Rooms, Balmoral ENDELLION STRING QUARTET with Shuna Wilson (cello) Debussy String Quartet Webern Five Pieces, op. 5 Schubert String Quintet in C major
