[The

MUSIC
Society
exists to promote a series of recitals in Belfast
given by top international artists of such
calibre as would normally only appear in
Belfast during the Queen's University
Festival.
We feel that our series of concerts is as good
as any you will find across the water-but our
ticket prices are hard to beat!
Naturally, it works out cheaper to buy a
season ticket, but should you only wish to
come to a few of the concerts, then please
feel free to do so. The BMS can only continue
with your support, so we look forward to
seeing you either at one concert or at all of
them.
++++
The British Music Society is run in association with the
Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Queen's
University Belfast.
We extend our grateful thanks to the Royal Ulster
Agricultural Society for their permission to utilise their
premises at Balmoral for two of our concerts this
season. RUAS members can gain admission to each
of these concerts at Balmoral at a concessionary rate.

PERFORMERS
The
LONTANO
Ingrid Culliford (flute), David Rix (clarinet), Ruth Crouch (violin),
Garth Knox (viola), Melissa Phelps (cello) and Odaline de la
Martinez (piano).
This is one of Britain's most exciting young ensembles, internation-
ally renowned for their performances of twentieth century music in
particular. This is their second visit to Belfast, having given two
outstanding concerts in the 'Sonorities' festival in April 1981.
ENDELLION STRING QUARTET
Andrew Watkinson (violin), Louise Williams (violin), Garfield
Jackson (viola) and David Waterman (cello).
This quartet made a sudden and dramatic impact on the British
Concert scene, gaining overnight success after their appearances at
the Portsmouth International String Quartet Competition in 1979.
They have now gained wide acclaim in the United States and in
Europe and are in constant demand throughout Britain. This will be
their first visit to Belfast.
EMER BUCKLEY
Ireland's most distinguished harpsichord player, Miss Buckley
pursues a hectic international career, currently residing in Paris. She
returns to Ireland whenever possible and, following her superb
recital in Belfast last April as part of the Early Music Festival, Miss
Buckley is returning to give this recital by popular demand.
WALTER KLIEN
Few people who listen to recordings of piano music will not have
heard of Walter Klien. Renowned as being one of the greatest
interpreters of piano music of the Classical period, his recordings of
Mozart, Beethoven and particularly Brahms must surely be amongst
any record collection. We are most fortunate to have Mr Klien in our
programme, his visit forming part of a British tour.
SARAH WALKER and ROGER VIGNOLES
Since winning the coveted Benson & Hedges Competition, Sarah
Walker has become one of Britain's most sought-after singers, both
as a soloist and as part of the Songmakers Almanac, with whom she
visited the Province a few years ago. Miss Walker recently gave two
concerts in the 1982 Proms in London to great critical acclaim.
Roger Vignoles is one of Britain's most experienced and well-known
accompanists, broadcasting frequently on television and radio.
Television viewers will remember his recent appearances as
accompanist in the Elizabeth Schwarzkopf Masterclasses.
PHILIP JONES BRASS ENSEMBLE
The members of this world-famous ensemble are all leading London
brass players, their reputation stretching as far afield as Australia,
Japan and the Middle East. Their recordings now number nearly 40,
embracing music as far apart in character as Gabrieli and Scott
Joplin and their concerts are renowned for providing a great
evening's entertainment.
