TONIGHT'S ARTIST ALIRIO DIAZ, born in Venezuela, is the most outstanding pupil of the great master ANDRES SEGOVIA. His early studies were at the Caracas Conservatory of Music from where he went to the Royal Conservatory of Madrid to study with Maestro REGINO SAINZ DE LA MAZA. After winning many prizes in Madrid, Diaz launched on his concert career and was unanimously acclaimed in the principal cities of Europe. After making this highly successful debut, he went to Siena in Italy to study with Segovia where he quickly won fame and was soon appointed his Assistant at the Siena Academy of Music. Alirio Diaz spends most of the year touring fr one continent to another, his concert appearances having won him a unique position in the world of the classical guitar. He is a great interpreter of the classical masters - Bach and Scarlatti in particular - but his repertiore ranges through centuries and countries and includes a wide variety of the popular music of Latin America.
