TESSERAE III Op. 15C, FOR SOLO CELLO JUSTIN CONNOLLY This work which has only recently been written is dedicated to the artist tonight, Ralph Kirshbaum. ARPEGGIONE SONATA Allegro moderato Adagio Allegretto SCHUBERT The arpeggione or guitar violoncello was a six-stringed instrument covering a similar range to that of the cello. It was invented by a certain Georg Staufer about 1823 and had a short undistinguished life except for this one work. Nowadays it is generally played on the cello. The first movement is conventionally written but the slow movement is most appealing and the melody might have come from one of Schubert's songs. The final allegretto is obviously designed to show off the brilliance of the instrument and its player. INTERVAL

SONATA IN G MINOR VITZUL Lento Allegro moderato - OT DEI RACHMANINOV Allegro scherzando ibid.how cir Andante Allegro mosso Rachmaninov, the centenary of whose birth we celebrate this year, wrote few chamber music works, but this sonata is ranked among his best compositions. About the time it was written (1901), his inspiration gained a new impetus and in this surge of creative energy he produced the famous C minor piano concerto, the cello and piano sonata and some beautiful songs. The general elegiac mood which can be found in the concerto also permeates this work and his use of his musical material shows a depth of maturity not to be found in his earlier works. 011919 from The writing for both instruments is grateful to the performers though the demands are of a virtuoso order. bed bits The sonata is planned in the recognised four movement pattern, with the scherzo coming second. The music needs no analysis for it speaks with that marvellous lyricism which is so typical of the composer at his best. musteni odt to consilind JAVATMI
