Quartet in B flat major, K.458 Allegro vivace assai Menuetto Moderato Adagio Allegro assai Mozart This quartet is one of the set of six written during the years 1782 1785 and dedicated to Haydn. They were composed under the influence of Haydn's six Russian Quartets of 1781, and are an important landmark in his artistic development. This quartet acquired the nick- name 'The Hunt' from the opening hunting-call phrase. Quartett satz in C minor, D.703 This quartet-movement was composed in December 1820, and exhibits the chromatic modulation and intense lyricism which began to feature in Schubert's music at that time. It was intended as the first move- ment of a complete quartet and part of an Andante in A flat also survives. INTERVAL Schubert

String Quartet No. 5 Allegro Adagio molto Scherzo Andante Finale Bartok Bartok's 5th Quartet, like the second, belongs to one of his intermediate 'romantic' periods. It is a five-move- ment work, and like the 4th Quartet is composed in 'arch form'-ABCBA-a typical example of Bartok's fondness for cyclic forms. Bartok contrived to draw new sounds from every established medium, especially the string quartet, not only by means of special pizzi- cato effects, as in the third movement of this work, but also simply by the completely original layout of the notes, as in the trio section of the same movement.
