564 G TRIO IN E MAJOR, K 542 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Allegro Andante grazioso Allegro This work was written in 1788, just before the last three sym- phonies. It is unique in Mozart's output as being the only work he ever wrote in this key. In the trios of Haydn the cello had little independant life, being chiefly a reinforcement of the bass line of the piano. In this trio the cello is granted a little more freedom, but hardly achieves the status of equal partnership; this was not to come until Beethoven took up the form. The first movement is in regular sonata form and, in the recapitulation, just after the first subject is given out by the piano, there is an interesting deviation into remote keys. This harmonic experimentation is to be found elsewhere in Mozart's later works, notably in the intro- duction to the C major (Dissonance) Quartet and points the way to Beethoven. The finale gave him much trouble and he abandoned his first attempt after 65 bars. The present finale is his second effort. FRAUENLIEBE UND LEBEN, Op 42 Robert Schumann (1810-1856) (1840. Chamisso. The cycle tells of a girl's love and marriage, of the birth of her child and the death of her beloved. After the last sad song the cycle is summed up in a pianoforte postlude.) Seit ich ihn gesehen Since I saw him I am become blind. I dream only of him and neglect the games of my sisters. I wish only to weep in my room. Er, der Herrlicheste von allen He, the most glorious of all men, bright in spirit and steadfast in courage, remote like a star in heaven. Wander on; to see you is enough. Deign not to know a lonely maid like me, O High Star of magnificence. Only the orthiest of all is fit for you; I shall bless her whom you choose. I shall rejoice and weep. If my heart should break, it matters not. Ich kann's nicht fassen, nicht glauben I cannot believe it, that it is I he has honoured and blessed. I thought he said "I am thine for ever". Let me dream on and drink in death in tears of joy.

Du Ring an meinem Finger O little golden ring on my finger, I press you devoutly to my lips and heart. I have passed from the dreams of my childhood; I was alone and you first showed me the boundless value of life. I shall live for him entirely; his brightness will transfigure me. Helft mir, ihr Schwestern Help me, sisters to adorn myself. Twine the myrtle round my brow. My beloved has sighed impatiently for this day, with longing in his heart. Help me to banish anxiety so that I may receive him with clear eyes. Give me of your radiance, my sun. Let me bow in humility before my lord. Scatter rosebuds for him, sisters, you whom I greet with sorrow even as I leave you for my joy. Süsser Freund, du blickest Beloved, you wonder how I can weep? The tears are of joy. Come let me whisper to you. Do you understand? Stay close to me, feel the beating of my heart. At my bed is room for a cradle where my dream shall lie hidden. One day the dream will waken and your image will smile up at me. An meinem Herzen, an meinem Brust A song of the deep joy of motherhood, of the fulfilment and happiness that a man cannot know, as the child smiles up at her face. Nun hast du mir der ersten Schmerz getan You have hurt me for the first time. You sleep the sleep of death; I am left alone and the world is empty. I live no longer, the veil falls; behind it lies my whole world, my lost happiness. INTERVAL La procession César Franck (1822-1890) (1888. Brizeux) A religious procession in which an image of the Saviour is carried by priests through the fields. The birds are bidden to mingle their songs with the hymns of the men, the sun to shine and the flowers to give forth their perfume in celebration. L'heure exquise Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947) White moonlight glints between the trees and voices fill the wood, beloved. Winds sigh among the branches of a willow tree whose black reflection plumbs the pool. Awake, it is the hour! From the starred sky it seems there falls a vast and tender calm. It is the perfect hour.

Beau soir Claude-Achille Debussy (1862-1918) (1878. Paul Bourget) When at sunset the rivers are pink and a cool shiver runs over the fields of corn, advice to be happy seems to come from all things and to rise towards the troubled heart. Advice to enjoy the charm of being in the world while one is young and the evening fine. For we leave it, just as the wave leaves us, it for the sea, we for the grave. Mandoline (1890. Verlaine) A picture of silk-clad serenader and long-robed lady, as the lover sings to her to the sound of the Mandolin. TRIO IN B FLAT MAJOR, D 898 Allegro moderato Andante un poco mosso Franz Schubert (1797-1828) Scherzo allegro Rondo allegro vivace This trio was written in 1827 and had one most successful perfor- mance in the composer's lifetime. It was published posthumously as Op. 99, which, like most of the opus numbers assigned to Schubert's works, is meaningless. Schubert was greatly influenced by Beethoven's example as a trio-writer; the three instruments have a full part and one feels that, heard singly, they would each make fascinating solos. The second movement consists of two song-like motives, the first being given to the cello, joined later by the violin, the piano playing a restrained accompaniment subtly varied within narrow limits, the second to the piano with a rich duet on the strings. The scherzo is a ländler movement, in the trio of which the strings are predominant over a pianoforte accom- paniment. The complexity of the final rondo shows again the influence of Beethoven.
