Ocr'd Text:
Two Preludes

No. 8 in E flat minor
Variations
Sonatina
Allegro
Rondo
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Air, variations and rondo
George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)
François Joseph Nadermann (1773-1835)
(Nadermann was a Parisian harpist and son of a harp-maker. He
composed much for the harp and entered into a controversy with
a rival instrument-maker, Erard, in defence of the Nadermann
family instrument as against Erard's new double-action harp. The
latter carried the day.)
Concert study
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Dieudonné Joseph Guillaume
Félix Godefroid (1818-1897)
(A gentleman with an imposing name like this hardly needs a note;
suffice it to say he was a Belgian harpist and composer who wrote
operas and many salon pieces for pianoforte.)
Impromptu, Op 86
Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924)
This impromptu was written in 1904 as a test piece for the Paris
Conservatoire competitions, and formed part of a scheme of refor-
mation which Fauré instituted there when he became director.

Pavanne and variations
Cabezón
(There were four composers of this name, all closely related. The
most important was Antonio (1500-1566); his brother was Juan
(?-1566), his nephews Agustin (?-?) and Hernando (1541-1602).)
Dance of the dwarfs
Ferrandière
(Nine musical encyclopaedias in four languages have failed to yield
any information about Ferrandière.)
Sonata
Mateo Antonio Perez de Albéniz (17755-1831)
(Matteo Albéniz is to be found in only one English book of refer-
ence, Eric Blom's Everyman's Dictionary of Music. His entry is
"(Born ? Died ?) Spanish 18th century composer. Wrote harp-
sichord solos)" The dates given above are taken from another
work.)
Variations on a Swiss air
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
Impromptu-caprice
Gabriel Pierné (1863-1937)
(Pierné was a French composer and conductor who succeeded
César Franck as organist at Sainte-Clotilde; he was for twenty-
seven years conductor of the Concerts Colonne.)

Three Basque melodies
Religiosa
Elegiaca
Canción del herrero
Jesús Guridi (1886- )
Viejo Zorziko
Malagueña
Isaac Albéniz (1860-1909)
(This is the best-known composer of this name. He started life as
a pianist, studying under Liszt. For long he lived in London
financed by one of the Money-Coutts family (Lord Latymer) on
condition that he set Latymer's opera libretti to music; he failed
to find much inspiration in them.)
Little Suite
Geraint Walters
Allegro moderato
Allegretto semplice
Allegro ben ritmico
(Mr. Walters is a member of the BBC music staff in London.)
Song in the night
Carlos Salzedo (1885- )
(Salzedo is a French-born harpist who went to New York at
Toscanini's request to become principal harpist of the New York
Philharmonic Orchestra. He became Professor of Harp at the
Julliard School and the Curtis Institute. He has composed much
for the harp, and, being interested in modern music, has greatly
extended the technique of the harpist.)
The Society is greatly indebted to the staff and re-
sources of the Central Library, Royal Avenue for
help in compiling these programmes.
