Trio in B flat, Op 97 Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Allegro moderato Scherzo Allegro - Trio Andante cantabile Allegro moderato - Presto This trio, composed in 1811, is one of a number of works dedicated to the Archduke Rudolph, Beethoven's patron; there is no par- ticular reason why it, out of them all, should have kept his title and be known as "The Archduke Trio". It fully deserves its aristocratic name for few would deny that it is the greatest of all piano trios. Beethoven is known to have appeared in a performance of it in 1814, before total deafness set in, his last public appear- ance as a pianist. In the first movement the opening subject is given out on the piano first of all, and after quiet meditation by the three instruments the second subject (in G major) is again enunciated by the piano. In the second movement the trio has two themes, the first a grave fugato, the second a waltz-like tune accompanied by the strings. The Andante is a set of four variations and leads directly to a defiantly gay finale. Five short pieces for Piano Trio Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) Allegro moderato Adagio Allegro Allegro moderato Allegro con brio Martinu was a Czech composer, mainly self-taught. He started his career as a violinist, playing in the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra for ten years. He spent much of his adult life in France and America, returning to his native land as professor of composition at Prague in 1949. He was a prolific composer, especially of chamber music. An opera written for radio, "Comedy on a Bridge", was performed some years ago in Belfast by the Studio Opera Group. He was much interested in polyphony and these pieces are an expression of this interest. They are typical of his output in general, in that they have a strangely impressive quality and rhythmic intensity. The composer accepted a description which likened them to sculptured marble. Trio in E minor, Op 90 Lento maestoso Poco adagio Andante - Antonin Dvorák (1841-1904) Allegro quasi doppio movimento Vivace non troppo Vivace non troppo Vivace Andante moderato - Allegretto scherzando - Meno mosso - Allegro - Tempo I Allegro Lento maestoso - Vivace This trio, composed in 1891, is known as the Dumky Trio. A Dumka is a lament of Ukrainian folk-origin (Dumky is the plural form). Five of the movements are in this form, and there is much coming and going from slow to fast and back again. In this work Dvorák is at the peak of his melodic and rhythmic inventiveness. Note that the first three movements are played without a break. MR. NICHOLAS ROTH plays a J. B. Guadagnini violin dated 1768 MR. GEORGE ROTH plays a Giovanni Grancini cello dated 1669
