Trio in F sharp minor, no 2
Allegro
Adagio cantabile
Finale: Tempo di menuetto
Written in 1794-5 this trio is numbered 2 in the Peters edition, 26
in the Larsen catalogue. Haydn wrote thirty-one Klavier trios,
mostly dating from his maturity. They contain very fine music,
but, except for two or three of them, have not succeeded in
establishing themselves in the concert repertoire. Haydn himself
described them as sonatas for Klavier with violin and violoncello.
The keyboard part is master. In the earliest trios the cello part
is a mechanical reinforcement of the pianoforte bass, a role it
often fills in this sonata. The violin is very much freer, though
tied closely enough to the pianoforte; but its function, on the
whole, is that of an obbligato instrument. As a result the trios do
not appeal to the virtuoso string player; it is this fact and no
inherent musical weakness that keeps them from the platform.
The second movement of this trio has material in common with
the slow movement of Symphony no 102 in B flat. It is not
known which was composed first.
Trio in B flat major, D.898
Allegro moderato
Andante un poco mosso
Scherzo: Allegro
Rondo: Allegro vivace
Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
This trio was written in 1827 and had one most successful
performance in the composer's lifetime. It was published post-
humously with the Opus no 99, which, like most of the opus
numbers assigned to Schubert's works is meaningless. Between
Haydn and Schubert had come Beethoven who had vastly enriched
the content of the trio by giving independent life to the three
instruments. Schubert was greatly influenced by Beethoven's

example and in the first movement of this trio one feels that the
instruments heard singly would give fascinating solo performances.
The second movement consists of two song-like motives, the first
being given to the cello joined later by the violin, with the piano
playing a restrained accompaniment subtly varied within narrow
limits, the second to the piano with a rich duet on the strings.
The scherzo is a ländler-like movement, in the trio of which the
strings are predominant over a pianoforte accompaniment. The
complexity of the final rondo shows again the influence of
Beethoven.

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
The opus number of this work is very misleading. Brahms wrote
and published this work as his opus 8 in 1854. It became popular,
but when he transferred his work to a different publisher in 1888
he acceded to a request to rewrite it. The revision was considerable,
so much so that he jokingly suggested calling it Op 108. The
scherzo remained practically unchanged. So, in the other move-
ments, did the opening themes, but the subsidiary material and
the developments were drastically altered. In the first movement
there was a great gain in concision.
N.B. - MEMBERS ARE ASKED TO NOTE THAT THE NEXT
CONCERT, ON JANUARY 28, WILL BE BROADCAST AND WILL
START PUNCTUALLY AT 7.45 P.M. THE INTERVAL WILL BE OF
