Sonata No. 1 in A minor, Op 105 Allegro affettuoso Intermezzo Allegro vivace Towards the end of the forties Schumann began to show signs of the mental instability which was to manifest itself as insanity before his death. He made an impressive return to mental vigour in 1851 as a composer, though he was showing himself at the same time unfitted to the conduct of his ordinary affairs. During this year he wrote his only two violin and piano sonatas, a combination of instruments in which he had hitherto shown little interest; both, however, are fine works. Some see in the restlessness of the first and third movements signs of his mental unease; be that as it may, there is no such indication in the Intermezzo. Sonata No. 10 in G major, Op 96 Robert Schumann (1810-1856) Chaconne Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Allegro moderato Adagio espressivo Scherzo: allegro Poco allegretto This sonata, composed in 1812, has none of the notoriety of its predecessor, the Kreutzer of 1803, but ranks as a more satisfactory work in the eyes of connoisseurs. The earlier work was composed for the brilliant virtuoso, Kreutzer (though not in fact first played by him); op. 96 was written for a violinist Rode, whose deeply poetic style of playing inspired a work whose demands can be fully exploited only by a masterly duo deeply in sympathy with each other. The last movement is an air with eight variations. INTERVAL Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) A chaconne was originally a dance in slow 3-beat time in which the theme is repeated over and over in the bass, with the upper parts freely varied. In solo violin work it is not always possible for the bass to be actually played, but it is always implied. This work forms the finale of the Partita No. 2 for solo violin, composed about 1720.

Five Melodies, Op 35 Andante Lento ma non troppo Animato ma non allegro Allegretto leggiero e scherzando Andante non troppo Italian Suite This work was arranged from five melodies without words written for voice and piano between 1920 and 1925. The mood of tender reverie of the first, second and fifth movements is varied by the fervent feeling of the third and the gentle humour of the fourth. Igor Stravinsky (1882- ) Introduzione Serenata Tarantella Menuetto e finale Sergey Prokofieff (1891-1953) In 1920 Stravinsky wrote a ballet suite for Diaghilev, based on music by Pergolesi, entitled Puncinella. In 1933 he arranged this suite for violin and piano, though for many years he "had taken no pleasure in the blend of strings struck in the piano with strings set in vibration by the bow". He refused to consider any greater number of strings in conjunction with the piano. Mr. Oistrakh plays a Stradivarius. Next Concert. Friday, March 5th: VLADIMIR ASHKENAZY Sonata in D minor, Op 31 No. 2 (The Tempest) Sonata No. 5 in A major, Op 120 Gaspard de la nuit Pavane pour une Infante défunte Sonata No. 5, Op 53 (one continuous movement) Beethoven Schubert Ravel Ravel Scriabin
