Variations in G major on "Ich bin der Schneider Kakadu", Op 121a Beethoven's opus numbers cannot be taken as an accurate guide to the order of composition of the works that bear them. As he became well-known his earlier compositions were much sought after by publishers and assigned numbers appropriate to their place in the order of publication. The first reference we have to this work is in a letter of 1816 giving a publisher particulars of the works he had available. We have, in fact, no other evidence of its date, except that it is manifestly a reasonably mature work. It was not published till 1823. The title "I am the tailor Kakadu" is the title of an aria from Die Schwestern von Prag by Wenzel Müller (1767- 1835), a very popular composer of operettas in Beethoven's day. Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) Trio in D minor, Op 120 Allegro ma non troppo Andantino Allegro vivo This work was composed in 1923 and first played, in Fauré's honour, by the most famous trio group of the day, Thibault-Casals- Cortot. At the time of its publication, Fauré was quite deaf, and his score looks sometimes as if he were writing in the abstract, without the check of the sound of live instruments. It calls for great tact in presentation, and has been called the most tenderly persuasive work of a composer from whom we never expect the major storms of passion. INTERVAL Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Trio in F minor, Op 65 Allegro ma non troppo Allegretto grazioso Poco adagio Allegro con brio Anton Dvorak (1841-1904) Dvorak was troubled in 1883 by problems of the relation of Tcheck culture and nationality to the Germanic hold on European music. At the same time his mother was ill and died. It was a period of "doubt, defiance, silent grief and resignation". It led, however, to a peak period in his powers, and this is the first work dating from it. Some critics have reservations about this trio, as showing excessive influence of Brahms.

Note on the Instruments Mr. Banat's violin is a Stradivarius, built in 1682 and lately known as the ex-Hill. It was until 1945 in a private collection and there is some evidence that it might have been from a set of instruments especially built for the court of James II of England. Mr. Banat acquired the instrument in 1955. Mr. Heifetz's cello is an Antonius and Hieronymus Amati, Cremona 1622. When Mr. Heifetz first came to London, the late Mr. Hill sent him a message that he would like to meet the cellist who was playing on his favourite instrument. Mr. Heifetz bought the instrument in the United States, but it had come from Hill's. Next Concerts.
