Thursday October 24 1963 ANNUAL MEETING AND A RECITAL BY MEMBERS' NIGHT LAMAR CROWSON (Piano) It has been the practice of the Society for many years to engage some of the younger British artists, and such recitals have often been among the most outstanding of our programmes. We confid- ently expect that this recital will be a memorable one, for Lamar Crowson is rapidly coming to the forefront of British pianists, both as soloist in concerti, and in recital, and we hope that there will be a large attendance to welcome his first visit to the Society. Thursday November 7 1963 I SOLISTI VENETI This remarkable chamber ensemble consists of eleven strings and harpsichord with conductor Claudio Scimone. The ensemble was founded by its present director in 1959 and has commanded the attention of the public and the press in the principal cities of Italy and Europe, among other engagements being their performances at the 80th Birthday celebrations of the King of Sweden. They have made many special recordings of eighteenth century music for the Italian State Record Library, but they are also noted for the varied range of their programmes. The director, Claudio Scimone, is from Padua, and he studied the art of conducting under Carlo Zecchi and Franco Ferrara. Thursday November 14 1963 MAX ROSTAL (Violin) and COLIN HORSLEY (Piano) Max Rostal was born in Austria and started to play the violin at the age of five. He was well known as a prodigy, and studied with Arnold Rose in Vienna and Carl Flensch in Berlin. At the 17 he started on his career with such sensational success that triumphant tour of Germany established him as a violinist of the front rank. The critics of the day compared him with the greatest violinists such Kreisler, Hubermann and Ysaye and he has since given concerts in most parts of the world. He now holds Professorships of Master Classes at the State Academy in Cologne and the Conservatoire of Berne. Colin Horsley was born in New Zealand, and now lives in England where he has spent half his life and where he has made a dis- tinguished reputation both as soloist and in Chamber Music. He made his debut in 1947 with the Hallé Orchestra at the invitation of Sir John Barbirolli, and has since toured extensively, often in partnership with Max Rostal.

Thursday December 19 1963 MOURA LYMPANY (Piano) We are delighted to have a return visit from this fine artist, who gave a memorable recital for the Society two seasons ago. Moura. Lympany made her first public appearance at the age of twelve, after which she made a tour of England, and broadcast from the B.B.C. She later studied under Paul Weingarten in Vienna, and Tobias Matthay in England. She won second prize to Emil Gilels in the Ysaye Piano Competition at Brussels in 1938. She has played all over Europe, the Americas, Australia and New Zealand, and her recordings are widely known and acclaimed throughout the world. Thursday January 16 1964. RICHARD LEWIS (Tenor) and GEOFFREY PARSONS (Piano) has also appeared for us on a previous occasion and we are glad to welcome him again to the wis' performances, as many will remember, y by his magnificent voice, but by his versa- tilreno sidee of musicianship in works of widely differing Chocodrigues firmly established as a star of Covent Garden, Glynradiocast, and San Francisco opera, and as an oratorio singer, but-se appally at home as a recitalist. His accompanist Geoffrey Parba also no stranger i us, having appeared on a number bus occasions. He is undoubtedly in the forefront of the specialised art of accompaniment. three

Thursday January 23 1964 GASPAR CASSADO (Cello) and CHIEKO HARA (Piano) When the famous Spanish 'Cellist Gaspar Cassado toured Japan in 1958, he was accompanied by his fiancée Chieko Hara, one of her country's foremost artists. She was persuaded to perform with him at the Osaka Festival, where they had enormous success. After their marriage in 1959 at Florence, where they now live, and after playing together on numerous occasions, the idea of a permanent Duo took on solid shape almost of its own accord. Concerts in London, Paris, Vienna and Salzburg which received c agant praise from public and press, made the partnership a l g fact. Cassado follows in the footsteps of his great master, Casals, and represents that school of playing in fabulous degree. Chieko Hara was a prize winner of the Paris Conservatoire, an artist of whom it is said "her style is as assured as it is graceful, as disciplined as it is brilliant." Thursday, March 5 1964 THE AEOLIAN STRING C The Aeolian String Quartet is one of the oldes sembles in the country-it was founded in 1927. Al. have been changes over the years in the personnel, these so gradual that the original tradition of the Quartet has b tained. Sydney Humphreys was appoint leader in 1951, R.. Keenlyside (violin) joined in 1961, and Derek Simpson suc John Moore (one of the founder members) in 1956. known violist, Watson Forbes, has been a member of the since 1932.
