Thursday October 4 1962 HEATHER HARPER (Soprano) and HAVELOCK NELSON (Piano) THE DARTINGTON STRING QUARTET and JANICE WILLIAMS (Piano) with This opening concert is held under the auspices of the B.B.C. and forms one of their current series of Thursday Invitation Concerts. We feel that the artists will need no introduction, and it gives us special pleasure to welcome Heather Harper once more to this Society and to her native Belfast. Thursday October 18 1962 MEMBERS' NIGHT ANNUAL MEETING AND A RECITAL BY JOAN DICKSON (Cello) and Thursday November 8 1962 LAWRENCE GLOVER (Piano) We are delighted to welcome back Joan Dickson to the B.M.S. She has visited us on previous occasions with the Edinburgh quartet, but for this recital we are to have the pleasure of hearing her with Lawrence Glover, who certainly needs no introduction to B.M.S. members. GYORGY PAUK (Violin) and NIGEL COXE (Piano) We are very pleased to welcome this young Hungarian violinist who left his native land in 1956. He has been highly praised by the critics for his flawless intonation and effortless technical skill in his playing of Bartok, and for his poetic feeling in the beauties of Chausson. We feel priviledged to have this young artist.

Thursday December 20 1962 JOHN OGDON (Piano) John Ogdon first rose to promin- ence as a result of winning the Second Prize in the Liverpool International Piano Concerto Competition in 1959. Since then he has appeared with all the major Symphony Orchestras of Great Britain, and on more than one occasion with the City of Belfast Orchestra, so he is no stranger to Northern Ireland. An outstanding pianist, John Ogdon now enjoys an enviable reput- ation, and not only in the British Isles, for in May 1962 he won jointly the International Tchaikowsky Competition in Moscow. Thursday January 3 1963 THE DOWLAND CONSORT The Dowland Consort was formed in Dublin in 1958 in order to specialise in the fine vocal music of the 16th and 17th centuries. It takes its name from the great Tudor composer, who, it is believed, was born in Dalkey, Co. Dublin, and the group comprises ten singers under the direction of Brian Boydell, recently appointed Professor of Music at Trinity College, Dublin. The singers perform in the traditional manner of the period, seated around a table, each item being informally introduced by the Director. Their un- doubted success has proved that the Golden Age of unaccompanied choral singing is by no means a specialised taste. Thursday January 24 1963 THE QUARTETTO DI ROMA We are pleased to have a return visit from this outstanding piano quartet who came to play for us so enchantingly two years ago. The pianist is Ornella Santoliquido, an outstanding artist in her own right, and holder of the Chair of Piano at the St. Cecilia Conservatoire in Rome. She was the founder of the Quartet whose other members, Massimo Amfiteatroff (Cello), Arrigo Pelliccia (Violin), and Dino Asciolla (Viola), are all widely respected both as soloists and as teachers of their respective instruments at the Conservatoires of Rome and Venice.

Thursday February 14 1963 2 BELA SIKI ANNIE FISCHER (Piano) Annie Fischer was born in Budapest and received her musical education at the Franz Liszt School, where her teachers included the composer Dohnanyi. She was thus fortunate in studying the piano with artists who taught in the direct and authentic Liszt tradition. Musically and technically her playing developed very early; she made her debut at eight, and when twelve years old embarked on her international career as a concert pianist, astonish- ing even the severest critics. Members of the Society will remember the fine recital she gave for us some years ago, and we are pleased to welcome her return to Belfast. Thursday February 28 1963 THE AMADEUS STRING QUARTET Some years ago at Wigmore Hall, London, four young musicians gave their first public concert as a quartet. The recital was received with tremendous enthusiasm by audience and critics, and led to an immediate demand for further concerts. So began the career of the Amadeus String Quartet, now recognised as one of the finest quartets in the world. The singleness of purpose of the individual members of the quartet, with their outstanding talent and musician- ship has contributed greatly to the remarkable homogeneity of their performances. Thursday March 14 1963 EMMY LOOSE (Soprano) and MARTIN ISEPP Emmy Loose of the Vienna State Opera, is renowned not only as an opera singer, but also in Lieder. She has sung at all the major European festivals as well as in London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Naples, Florence, Barcelona and Buenos Aires. She gave forty Lieder recitals in the United States during Mozart year, as well as her European engagements. She has made recordings for H.M.V., Columbia and Decca.
