Sonata in C major, K 330 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1792) Allegro moderato Andante cantabile Allegretto This was written in 1778, when Mozart went to Paris as a man and found it not easy to recapture the success he had there as a boy prodigy, a visit made tragic by the death of his mother who had accompanied him. It is a gracious, straightforward work. Impromptu in G flat, D 899, No. 3 Franz Schubert (1797-1828) Schubert wrote two sets of four impromptus in 1727, of which the other set was recently played for us by Miss Fischer. The title was given by the publisher, who also changed the key of this one to G and altered the time signature. This impromptu is placidly pastoral. Variations and fugue on a theme of Handel Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) The theme on which this work is based comes from Handel's ninth suite for harpsichord, where it formed the subject for a set of five variations, which are so simple that they form an enormous contrast to what Brahms does with it. He has twenty-five short variations, not often immediately recognizable by the ear as closely connected with the theme, in which he tackles a wonderful variety of technical problems, always as an artist, and never, in spite of their prodigious learning, in a spirit of dry pedantry. He sets very tight limits for himself, keeping to Handel's eight-bar scheme throughout and departing from the key of B flat in only four of the variations and that no further than to the tonic minor or relative minor. The final fugue is an exhilarating ending to a superb work. INTERVAL

Three Preludes Op. 32 in A minor This is No. eight of a set of thirteen Preludes dating from 1910. It is a brilliant showpiece composed with wonderful mastery of pianistic effect. Op. 23 No. 10 in G flat Op. 23 No. 2 in B flat Opus 23, comprising ten Preludes was published in 1904, but some were written earlier. That in G flat is a tranquil work, with obvious debts to Chopin. That in B flat has been called Rachmaninov's "Revolutionary" and there is again an obvious comparison to be made with Chopin. Estampes Pagodes Soirée dans Grenade Jardins sous la pluie Sergey Vassilievich Rachmaninov (1873-1943) Two Pieces These three "prints" or "etchings" date from 1903 and are the first piano writings of Debussy to show his characteristic and highly individual style of piano writing. It is written in the five- note scale, borrowed, by way of Ravel, from the Javanese dancers heard at the Paris world exhibition. The Soirée dans Grenade is one of the numerous attempts at Spanish music written by French composers. De Falla says that this is characteristically Spanish down to its smallest details. The Jardins sous la pluie is a toccata based on two French folk-songs. It is one of the few instances where Debussy has been really successful with a piece in quick tempo. Consolation No. 3 in D flat Polonaise No. 2 in E Claude-Achille Debussy (1862-1918) Franz Liszt (1811-1886) These are typical examples of Liszt's miscellaneous writing; his reputation as a serious musician depends on his exploration of new forms of expression; there is not much of this to be found here. There is, however, brilliant opportunity for the concert player to show his paces.
