CLAUDIO ARRAU
(piano)
We are extremely fortunate
to secure the engagement of
this world famous artist, fol-
lowing his appearances at the
Edinburgh and Athens Fes-
tivals. Claudio Arrau is now
one of the greatest names in
music, and in the opinion of
many critics and musicians he
is the greatest living pianist. Born in Santiago, he gave his first
recital at the age of five, and was sent by the Government of Chile
to study in Germany with Martin Krauss, a pupil of Liszt. He won
his first major prize at Geneva at the age of twenty four, and since
then has been playing continually all over the world. He claims
the unique distinction of being the first pianist in history to be
known on five continents before the age of fifty.

MARTIN ISEPP

an international reputation not only as an Opera Singer, but also
in Lieder. She has also sung in oratorios by Bach, Handel and
other composers, and in Mahler's 4th Symphony. She has sung at
Festivals in Salzburg, Munich, Aix-en-Provence and Glyndebourne,
and has given performances in London, Paris, Berlin, Rome,
Naples, Florence, Barcelona and Buenos Aires. As a Lieder singer,
Emmy Loose gave, in addition to her European engagements, forty

PIERRE FOURNIER
('cello) and
ERNEST LUSH
(piano)
We are very pleased to welcome Pierre Fournier again to the
B.M.S. Music critics the world over have named this artist "The
Aristocrat", "The Poet", "The Magician of the 'Cello", "Master in
the highest sense of the word". Born in Paris in 1906, Fournier
started studying the 'cello at the age of nine, after an attack of
infantile paralysis, which led him to his musical career. He con-
tinued his studies at the Conservatoire in Paris, where he was
later to be teacher of the 'Cello Master Class from 1941 to 1949.
Every season he takes part in most of the important international
festivals, and works of Poulenc, Martinu, Schoeck and Roussel
have been dedicated to him. Pierre Fournier now lives in Switzer-
land, where he has resided in Geneva since 1956.

RICHARD LEWIS
(tenor) and
GEOFFREY PARSONS
(piano)
Critics everywhere hail Richard Lewis as one of the finest Tenors
of our time. He is firmly established as a star of Covent Garden,
Glyndebourne, and San Francisco opera companies, and has
achieved an international reputation as both a concert and oratorio
singer, being especially noted for his interpretation of the part of
"Gerontius". His performances are enriched not only by his
magnificent voice, but by the versatility and high degree of
musicianship and style which he brings to so many works widely
differing in character. At home Richard Lewis is a keen and
talented amateur cine-photographer, and among his other hobbies
are tennis and driving. He is married, and has a small son.

THE CARMIRELLI STRING QUARTET
Once again we welcome this outstanding ensemble. The Carmirelli
String Quartet was formed in 1954 by Pina Carmirelli, who also
the Quintetto Boccherini in 1949, and whose repertoire
she created following her research into the archives of that com-
poser. She is Professor of the St. Cecilia Conservatoire in Rome,
and her brillant solo recital last season will be remembered by
members. The second violinist is Monserrat Gervera, a young and
brilliant player of Spanish origin who until 1954 was soloist of I
Musici. The 'Cellist is Arturo Bonucci, one of the pillars of the
Quintetto Boccherini, as is the viola player Luigi Sagratti, a first
class musician who joined that ensemble in 1954.

THE QUARTETTO DI ROMA
(piano quartet)
This very fine ensemble is justly famous in its native Italy and on
the continent. The Quartetto di Roma has also toured extensively
in America, where they met with an overwhelming success. The
members are Arrigo Pelliccia (Violin), Dino Asciolla (Viola),
Massimo Amfitheatrof ('Cello) and Ornella Santoliquido (Piano).
The last two musicians are also extremely well known as soloists
in their own right, and we consider ourselves fortunate to secure.
the services of this outstanding Quartet on its first visit to the
United Kingdom. The Quartetto di Roma records for Westminster
and Deutsche Grammofon.

THE ALLEGRI STRING QUARTET
This Quartet made its debut in London in 1954. It takes its name
from Gregorio Allegri (1582-1652), reputed to be the first composer
ever to write for a quartet of strings. The Quartet has toured
extensively in the British Isles, and may be heard frequently on the
air, taking part in many of the BBC's most important Chamber
Concerts. They have also appeared on the continent with marked
success and have recorded for H.M.V. in the History of Music
series. The members are Eli Goren, James Barton, Patrick Ireland,
and William Pleeth.

CLIFFORD CURZON
(piano)
For many years we have tried to secure an engagement of this
distinguished artist, and at last our efforts have been successful.
Clifford Curzon was born in London in 1907. He was the youngest
student ever to enter the Royal Academy of Music, where at the
age of twelve, he studied under Professor Reddie. Later he also
studied with Katharine Goodson. His London debut took place at
Queen's Hall, where at the age of sixteen, he played at a Prom-
enade Concert. He tours extensively in America and Europe, and
in 1952 he founded, with Szigeti, Primrose, and Fournier, the Edin-
burgh Festival Piano Quartet. In the New Year's Honours List
of 1958, he was created a Commander of the British Empire for
his services to music.
