Friday, October 9th, 1959 THE AMADEUS STRING QUARTET with GERVASE DE PEYER (clarinet) This world-famous quartet was founded in 1948 when the four young musicians who are still its members played together frequently, and developed the idea of forming a string quartet- the ambition of each of them individually for a long time. This singleness of purpose, combined with the artists' outstanding talent and musicianship has contributed greatly to the remarkable homogeneity of their performances. Now they make a welcome return to us with a reputation as one of the finest quartets in the world to-day. We also welcome another visit from Gervase de Peyer, whose exquisite playing has so delighted us in the past. He studied at the Royal College of Music under the late Frederick Thurston, winning many coveted prizes and medals, and is now established as one of the foremost soloists in the country. The programme will include the Mozart Clarinet Quintet. Saturday, October 24th, 1959 GERARD SOUZAY (baritone) and DALTON BALDWIN We are extremely fortunate to secure again the services of this superb artist, whose recital last year was such a success. Gerard Souzay tremendous was born at Angiers in France, and went to Paris at the age of 17 to study singing under Pierre Bernac. In 1940 he entered the Paris Conservatoire, and in June of the same year had won First Prize. On leaving the conser- vatoire he embarked on a brilliant career, which developed each year until his reputation became world-wide. He has given performances in almost every country in the world including Australia, South Africa, Japan and India, and has made frequent tours of the United States and South America. The programme will include lieder, and songs by Ravel,

Friday, November 20th, 1959 ROSALYN TURECK (piano) Born in America of Russian and Turkish descent, Rosalyn Tureck gave her first recital when only. nine years old. She was not allowed, however, to become a child prodigy, and continued her studies, graduating from the Juil- lard School of Music in 1935, Cum Laude. It was not until 1947 that she was able to visit Europe, and the initial successes of that tour have been repeated in every season since 1953. Having succeeded in filling the immense Royal Festival Hall in 1956 with a solo Bach recital, she now continues to give a recital there each year. It is, of course, for her superb playing of Bach's music that Rosalyn Tureck is chiefly known, and all those who heard her wonderful perform- ances in previous seasons will agree "It is indeed rare to find a superbly equipped technician, a passionately sympathetic musician, and a scholar all in one and the same person, but this is Miss Tureck." The programme will include a performance of the Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in D. Saturday, December 19th, 1959 ILSE WOLF (soprano) and MARTIN ISEPP Ilse Wolf was born in Dueren, Germany, and since 1939 has made her home in England. She is now a naturalised British subject. She first studied singing with her mother, and made her first public appearance in Germany at the age of sixteen. Her teachers in this country were Emmy Heim and Helene Isepp. A gifted singer, with a lovely soprano voice, Ilse Wolf has appeared at the Royal Festival Hall, sung in opera, and broadcasts frequently in all services of the B.B.C. She is well-known throughout the country as a recitalist, and has also sung abroad, notably in Italy and Switzerland. The programme will include songs by Hugo-Wolf and Benjamin Britten.

Friday, January 15th, 1960 PETER KATIN (piano) Peter Katin was born in London in 1930, and started playing the piano at the age of four. When he was eleven he came to the notice of the late Dr. Harvey Grace, and joined his choir as head chorister. At that time Dr. Grace introduced him to Harold. Craxton, who accepted Peter Katin as a senior student on his return to London in 1941. He was therefore the youngest student to have entered the Royal Academy of Music. To-day Peter Katin enjoys a reputation as one of the finest of the younger generation of musicians, and has appeared with concertos and recitals in almost every part of the British Isles. Of recent years he has also had distinguished success on the Continent, including a most successful debut in South Africa. The programme will include Brahms' "Variations on a theme of Handel. Friday, February 12th, 1960 PINA CARMIRELLI (violin) and PIER NARCISO MASI Our members will need no introduction to Pina Carmirelli, who has visited the Society during the past two seasons as leader of the Carmirelli String Quartet, whose playing so delighted us. Pina Carmirelli is now devoting increasing time and attention to Sonata performances with Pier Narciso Masi, and together they have achieved great success on the Continent. It is with great pleasure that we welcome Pina Carmirelli again to the B.M.S., and we are assured of a most enjoyable recital. The programme will include Beethoven's "Kreutzer" Sonata. Friday, March 4th, 1960 QUINTETTO CHIGIANO (piano quintet) For the past four years we have hoped to secure the services of this exceptionally fine ensemble, and we are very pleased that at last they have been able to come to the B.M.S. Seventeen years of uninterrupted concert activity throughout Europe have brought ever increasing acclaim to the Quintetto Chigiano. This now famous piano quintet was formed in 1939 in Siena, Italy, at the renowned Chigiana Academy, where each summer the Quintetto Chigiano holds master classes in chamber music. Today in the judgement of the severest music critics of Europe, the Quintetto Chigiano is the most outstanding and notable ensemble in the history of chamber music. The performances of the Quintetto Chigiano are noted for a vast reportory of piano quintets and quartets, classic and romantic, and for a particular dedication to the Boccherini quintets, as well as to contemporary works. The programme will include quintets by Boccherini and Schumann.

Saturday, March 19th, 1960 THE SMETANA STRING QUARTET Although the Smetana Quartet has not had a very long career, its history has been a brilliant one. At the Prague Conservatoire in 1943, four students met together, inspired by their common desire to make chamber music. They formed a quartet, and began to work under the guidance of Professor Josef Micka, a pupil of Jacques Thibaud. Within two years, they had such encouraging results that they decided to become a permanent group pledging themselves in the name of the great master of Czech music, Bedrich Smetana. The individual members of the quartet have never allowed outside musical activities to disturb their integrity as a chamber music ensemble, and a unique feature of their work together is that all their public performances are played from memory. The programme will include Quartets by Mozart and Smetana. GUEST TICKETS will be available for each recital at 10s. 6d. These must be purchased in advance, as payment cannot be accepted at the Hall. A member may invite any number of guests, but a particular guest may not be introduced more than twice during the season. The ANNUAL MEETING and MEMBERS' NIGHT will be held on September 18th at 8.15 p.m. The business meeting will be followed by a piano recital by Lawrence Glover, and tea I will be served. The Society subscribed to the CHESTER MUSIC LIBRARY and members are invited to make use of the facilities provided to borrow musical scores. Special terms are available to parties of students from SCHOOLS and TECHNICAL COLLEGES. No formalities are at NEW MEMBERS are most welcome. present necessary to join the Society, other than the payment of the Subscription.
