CELLO CONCERTO IN B FLAT Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805) Allegro moderato Adagio non troppo Rondo: allegro This concerto has an interesting history. In 1895 a distin- guished cellist and composer of Dresden named Grützmacher published under Boccherini's name a fifth concerto which rapidly outpaced all its companions in popularity. The original version was not discovered until 1948 in the Dresden State Library and a comparison shows that Grützmacher very considerably refashioned the concerto in the prevailing taste of the period. Written in the usual three movements, the concerto is not lacking in originality, from the florid decorations of the first movement to the brilliant, gay rondo of the finale. SONATA IN C Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) Allegro Andante Moderato Rossini's chief fame rests on his operas but he also composed a number of charming instrumental works at the beginning and end of his career. The set of five sonatas for strings was written in 1804 when the composer was twelve. There are no violas used in the ensemble. The first movement is in the usual sonata form and includes some typical Rossinian tunes and some amusing solos for the double bass. The operatic composer peeps through in the melodramatic opening of the slow movement and the rich melody for the first violins which follows. The final movement is a Theme and Variations in which a first violin, a double bass, a cello and second violin all get a chance to show off. INTERVAL

TRAUERMUSIK Soloist STEFANO PASSAGGIO, Viola. This work was written on the death of King George V in 1936 by the composer in one day. It is a most eloquent tribute in which the sombre colour of the viola is eminently suitable. There are four sections; after a short introduction by the string orchestra, the soloist develops this material. The second section is in a more peaceful mood of resignation, but the third expresses the bitterness of the loss. In the closing bars the muted orchestra states the chorale "Old Hundredth," while the viola intervenes at the end of every four bars with expressive phrases based on the previous thematic material. The orchestra brings the work to a peaceful finish with the final bars of the chorale. SIMPLE SYMPHONY Paul Hindemith (1895- ) Benjamin Britten (1913- ) Boisterous Bourrée Playful Pizzicato Sentimental Sarabande Frolicsome Finale This symphony was put together by Britten at the age of 21 from pieces salvaged from his compositions written between the ages of nine and twelve. It was published under the somewhat unfamiliar style of E. B. Britten, the E. standing for Edward. SUITE FOR STRINGS SCHERZO Fran Lhotka (1883- ) The Jugoslav composer studied at Prague under Dvorak and Janacek and in 1938 became Director of the Academy of Music in Zagreb. His best known work in this country is the ballet The Devil in the Village which had great success in London during the visit of the Jugoslav Ballet a short time ago. Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) Sarabande Giga Badinerie The three pieces of this suite were selected from the solo violin sonatas of Corelli's Opus 5 by the Spanish violinist and composer Arbos (1863-1939), just as, a century and a half earlier, Corelli's famous pupil Geminiani made several orchestral adapta- tions of his master's violin sonatas. Arbos' arrangements are freer than the older composer's owing to the advance in violin technique, but they still retain the spirit of the original.
