THE GRILLER STRING
QUARTET
The Griller String Quartet gave its first public concert
in London on November 8th, 1928, when the members
were students at the Royal Academy. Then only newly
formed, the Quartet decided that they could only
attempt to reach the standard at which they aimed if
they devoted themselves exclusively to chamber music.
They have remained faithful to their early resolve. So
long an association of the same four players in the
study of quartet playing-and of quartet playing only
is probably unique in the history of music, and
accompanied by musical intelligence and virtuosity is
responsible for the well-deserved reputation the Quartet
has gained as being one of the finest in the world.
Their programme will include the first performance
in the British Isles of Bloch's Fifth String Quartet.
Friday, November 23rd, 1956 7.45 p.m.
MURIEL SMITH
(Soprano) with
DANIEL KELLY
This young American Soprano is making her first visit
to Ireland for this recital. She has had much success
Ocr'd Text:
in a wide variety of roles ranging from operetta to
grand opera and lieder. Elizabeth Schumann became
interested in her performance of lieder, and undertook
to give her tuition early in her career. We look
forward with much interest to this recital by a young
artist who may soon have a nation-wide reputation.
Saturday, December 1st, 1956-7.45 p.m.
THE LOEWENGUTH STRING
QUARTET
In 1936, the Loewenguth Quartet was the first French
Quartet to give a series of concerts in the United States,
and during the course of two tours in this country and
Canada they appeared at the Town Hall, New York,
and in Cincinatti, Providence, Montreal, Quebec, etc.
This Quartet was engaged in December, 1946, by the
B.B.C. to give the complete cycle of Beethoven Quartets
in six broadcasts, the first time they called upon an
Ensemble to give such a series in the Third Programme.
The Quartet has recently returned from a tour of
America, when they were presented with four Amati
instruments to be used by them for the duration of
their career.
Friday, January 18th, 1957 - 7.45 p.m.
ROSALYN TURECK
(Pianoforte)
Born in America of Russian and Turkish descent,
Rosalyn Tureck had her first recital when only nine
years old. She was not allowed, however, to become
a child prodigy, and continued her studies, graduating
from the Julliard School of Music in 1935. It was not
until 1947 that Rosalyn Tureck was able to visit
Europe, and the initial successes of that tour have
been repeated for the last three years, including a well-
remembered visit to this Society last year. Of her
playing the "Times" has written: "There is hardly
a pianist in the world who plays Bach to such complete

satisfaction. It is indeed rare to find a superbly equipped
technician, a passionately sympathetic musician, and a
scholar all in one and the same person, but this is
Miss Tureck.'
Friday, February 1st, 1957 - 7.45 p.m.
ANTONIO JANIGRO
(Violoncello) with
ERNEST LUSH
Antonio Janigro, an Italian, was born at Milan in
1918. He studied music at the Conservatoire of his
native town, and at the Ecole Normale at Paris. A
first prizewinner at many national and international
competitions, Janigro was a very young man when
he embarked on his career as a soloist, being only
sixteen when he gave his first concert. Today, after a
brilliant fifteen years, his name and art are known
throughout the world. Since 1939, he has been in
charge of the advanced 'cello class at the Zagreb
Conservatoire in Jugoslavia. He uses a Guadagnini
instrument of exceptionally fine tone.
Saturday, February 2nd, 1957- 3.00 p.m.
THE ZAGREB SOLOISTS
ENSEMBLE
Our members will need no introduction to this
exceptional ensemble, which last year gave one of
the most brilliant recitals it has ever been our good
fortune to offer. Founded in 1954 by Radio Zagreb,
the ensemble is composed of thirteen string players
who play under the direction of Antonio Janigro
Besides numerous performances at public concerts, the
Zagreb Soloists have broadcast from many European
stations and have played in many cities and at music
festivals. The large and varied repertoire includes
works of the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods,
and also contemporary music. Some eminent Jugoslav
composers have written works especially for the
ensemble.

ROBERT GOLDSAND
Friday, February 22nd, 1957 -
(Pianoforte)
This young American pianist enjoys a considerable
reputation both as musician and executant. He is
particularly well known for his interpretation of the
works of Liszt, the technical difficulties of which
appear to vanish under his fingers. This is his first
visit to Ireland.
Saturday, March 16th, 1957 - 7.45 p.m.
LISA DELLA CASA
(Soprano) with
GERALD MOORE
This delightful artist was born in Switzerland and
studied music at the Berne Conservatoire, and singing
with Frau Dr. Haeser in Zurich. She made her debut
at the Stadttheater, Zurich, in 1943 as Mimi in "La
Boheme". She soon attracted the attention of operatic
observers in other countries and was invited to sing
at the Salzburg Festival in 1947. So successful was
this performance, that she was immediately engaged
for the Vienna State Opera. In the first performance
of Strauss's "Arabella" since the war she filled the
title role with such distinction that the coveted title
of Kammersangerin was bestowed upon her. Lisa
Della Casa has also sung at Glyndebourne, Edinburgh
Festival, Covent Garden, Bayreuth, La Scala, and at
the Metropolitan Opera, New York, while retaining
her connection with Vienna, Munich and Salzburg. In
addition to opera, she is conversant with all the leading
soprano oratorio roles of Handel, Haydn, Brahms,
Mozart, etc., and gives many recitals. She is married
to a music critic of Jugoslav origin, lives in Switzerland,
and has a six-year-old daughter, Vesna.
