THE WIGMORE ENSEMBLE
We are very pleased that we have been able to
engage this splendid ensemble again to open our
season. We have had many requests for a return
visit from those who so enjoyed their playing last
year, and on this occasion we are to have a
slightly larger ensemble, with the accent on wind
instruments flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and
horn. The programme will include works by
Mozart, Beethoven, Damase and Poulenc.
Friday, October 21st, 1955
GERHARD HUSCH
(Baritone) with
ERNEST LUSH
It is many years since Gerhard Husch visited Great
Britain, and it is with special pleasure that we
welcome him to Belfast. A lieder singer of
outstanding merit, his name is perhaps now less well
known than that of some younger artists, but in the
years before the war Gerhard Husch set a standard,
of lieder singing especially, which the artists of
to-day find it difficult to emulate. His programme
will include songs by Schubert, Brahms and Wolf,
and by the Finnish composer Yrjo Kilpinen. With
Ernest Lush as accompanist, this promises to be
an outstanding recital.

THE ZAGREB
SOLOISTS ENSEMBLE
This is an ensemble of eleven string players, all
soloists in their own right. Vladimir Ruzdjak
(Baritone) will sing with the ensemble, and Antonio
Janigro, the famous 'cellist, directs the music, and
will also play a concerto. The visit of the Ensemble
to this country is sponsored by the Hungarian
Government. The programme will consist of
seventeenth and eighteenth century music, including
works by Vivaldi, Monteverdi, Scarlatti, Handel
and Mozart.

HEATHER HARPER (Soprano)
RALPH HOLMES (Violin)
JOHN STREETS (Pianoforte)
From time to time the society offers an engagement
to younger artists who seem to show unusual
promise. Miss Harper, who comes from Belfast,
has had remarkable success in London, particularly
in operatic roles, but on this occasion she will sing
a group of English songs, and a group of lieder.
Mr. Holmes has been hailed as a violinist of
outstanding accomplishment, and Yehudi Menuhin
showed great interest in his playing during his last
visit to England.

THE VIENNA
PHILHARMONIA QUARTET
This fine quartet played for us two years ago,
and at that time there were many requests for a
return visit. It was not possible to arrange this
last season, but now we are again to have an
hear their fine playing. We
opportunity to
especially remember their playing of Beethoven,
and their programme will again include works by
this composer for whom they have such complete
understanding.

SOLOMON
(Pianoforte)
We feel sure that no introduction is needed for
this supreme artist, whose playing of the music of
the classical composers, especially, has aroused
world-wide appreciation. Solomon will play works
by Bach, Brahms, Beethoven and Chopin.

THE LONDON
HARPSICHORD ENSEMBLE
The harpsichord is again being regarded as an
instrument in its own right, and not as one replaced
by the piano, and much of the credit for this
revival must go to the performances by this
Ensemble. There will be four players: Flute,
Violin, Cello and Harpsichord, and this will be
a unique opportunity to hear the music of Bach,
Handel, Scarlatti, Sammartini and Telemann
played as nearly as possible to the composer's
intention.
