PROGRAMME
CHACONNE IN D MINOR
Bach-Busoni
Busoni's transcription for pianoforte of the chaconne
which forms the last movement of Bach's Partita in D
Minor for unaccompanied violin. A chaconne is a series
of variations on a ground bass, the upper parts being
freely varied; in the original violin work the ground
bass could not always be present, but was always
implied.
SONATA IN C MAJOR (Waldstein), OP. 53
Beethoven
Composed in 1804 and dedicated to Count Waldstein,
this sonata owes its inspiration to the same countryside
(and Beethoven's love of it) as the Pastoral Symphony.
The vigorous and exhilarating first subject contrasts
with the cool and quiet second subject which seems to
suggest entering into shade after a brisk and exciting
walk. The Andante Favori in F was originally intended
to be the slow movement of this sonata, but Beethoven
dropped it and substituted the Adagio which leads into
the finale, which, for all its elaboration, is a simple
rondo form.
