Se tu m'Ami
Pergolesi
If thou lovest or sighest only for me, gentle shepherd,
then I must be sorry for thine anguish.
Piangerò la sorte mia
I
Se Florindo è Fedele
Scarlatti
If Florindo is faithful, then I shall show my love. But he
cannot win me with sighing or with weeping.
Handel
Spirit of great Pompeius, thy greatness was but shadow;
such must be the end of human splendour. Life, thou
art paltry, frail is thine existence! Yet though I vanish,
my glory shall live for ever.

MOZART
Die Zufriedenheit
How calm and tranquil I feel here, free from every care.
I laugh at the great ones, for I have more happiness
than any conqueror.
Frühlingssmerz
Das Veilchen
A lovely violet stood unknown in a meadow. A young
shepherdess comes singing. "Ah", thinks the violet,
"that I were beautiful, so that she might pluck me".
But the maiden trod it underfoot, and as it died, it
rejoiced "I die at her feet".
It is evening; the sun has set and the moonlight gleams.
Soon thus will pass life's many coloured scene, and the
curtain will fall.
Einsam ging ich jüngst im Haine
As I walked in the lonely wood, I came on little Cupid
sleeping. I sighed as I gazed: he awakes, and seizing
his avenging arrow, wounds me in the heart.

Der Silfe
Here peace and contentment have always presided. No
dark cloud of trouble obscures my joyous view. And
those sweet companions were by you provided, my heart's
dearest treasure. I owe them both to you.
Warnung
Men are always fond of flirting. Beware pretty maids!
Fathers! Keep your daughters safe at home!

SCHUBERT
Lied der Mignon
Let me be happy while I may, for I leave this beautiful
earth. High in that dark house I shall find rest from
torment, for the beauty of that heavenly vision can never
fade,
Auf dem Wasser zu singen
On the sparkling mirror of the water, the boat floats like
a swan. The rich tints of evening light the scene.
Gladness from Heaven breaks o'er the soul in the red
glow of evening.
Du bist die Ruh'
Be with me now and fill my spirit. Thou canst bring
me to heights of bliss, to depths of pain. Come to me
and rest, and be my guest for ever.
Gretchen am Spinnrade
Die Forelle
In a sparkling stream I watched a little silver trout,
darting like an arrow in the shallows. An angler swiftly
casts his line, and heedless of the danger, the trout is
caught.
My peace is gone-no rest can be mine! I watch for him
in the street, for the way he walks, the sound of his
voice, his hand in mine. I long to be with him, for his
arms to enfold me.

Volkslieder
IV
BRAHMS
(Translations abridged from those of Victor Schuster)
Schwesterlein
"Sister, when do we go home?" "To-morrow at cock-
crow the joy of the dance does not end till then".
"Sister, it is time to go". "Leave me alone, my love is
dancing with me". "Sister, you are stumbling". "Find
me my bed, it will be fine under the turf".
Die Trauernde
My mother hates me and I have no love. Why don't I
die? My heart is so sick I cannot dance. Leave the
three roses on their cross-Do you know the girl that
lies beneath it?
Schwäbisches Volkslied
The swallow flies far away to another place. Why can't
I go too? I have no happiness here. Come, swallow,
and take me with you.
In stiller Nacht
In the silence of the night, the soft wind brings the sound
of a plaintive voice. My heart overflows with pain and
sorrow. The birds no longer sing, no joyful sound is
heard. All the animals mourn with me.
Feinsliebchen
"Dear love, you mustn't go barefoot, you'll hurt your
feet". "But I have no shoes to wear". "Be mine, and I
will buy you fine shoes". "But I'm only a poor servant
girl". "I will take you, for you are good and true".
What did he take from his purse? A golden ring.
Vergebliches Ständchen
"Good evening my little one. I come to thee in love.
Open the door". "My door is closed, and I won't let you
in". "The night is cold, my heart will freeze, and my
love will be put out". "Put it out then! Off you go to
your bed! Goodnight!"
