THE HARROGATE
SUBSCRIPTION CONCERTS
HE Organisers of these new concerts, fully realising the
desirability of maintaining the reputation of Harrogate as a
musical centre (a reputation which is, to some extent, jeopardised
by the decision of the Municipality to disband its orchestra), have
prepared a comprehensive scheme, covering, as it does, a series of six
orchestral concerts on Thursday evenings in the Royal Hall, and six
afternoon Celebrity Concerts, which it is hoped to hold in the Ball-room
of the Majestic Hotel on Wednesdays.
For these twelve concerts only artists of world-wide reputation
have been engaged, and a cursory glance at the list of tentative engage-
ments will show that the rates of subscription are comparatively small.
The orchestra will be the well-known Bradford Philharmonic Orchestra
(of about 50 performers), under the direction of Mr. Keith Douglas.
As arrangements stand at the time of going to print, the rates of
subscription will be as follows:-
For either series-the six evening orchestral concerts, or the six
afternoon celebrity concerts-the charge will be £1 10s. Od. for each
subscriber. For the entire series of twelve concerts, £2 10s. Od. A
reduction of 10s. is, therefore, made to members of the public who are
willing to subscribe to the whole scheme. These figures include the
Entertainment Tax.
The accommodation at the Majestic Hotel is limited to 400; the
Royal Hall is, of course, considerably larger.
The Organisers, however, wish to draw the attention of their
potential Patrons to the fact that, if the scheme is to materialise, it
will be absolutely necessary to obtain 400 subscribers to the afternoon
concerts on Wednesdays, and at least 600 subscribers to the Thursday
evening orchestral concerts by APRIL 1, 1931. Subscriptions for the
entire series of twelve concerts will be appropriately divided. EARLY
APPLICATION IS, THEREFORE, ESSENTIAL, and the latest date for posting
the form of application (to be found at the end of this syllabus) will
be March 31.
IF THE REQUIRED NUMBER OF SUBSCRIBERS ARE NOT OBTAINED BY
APRIL 1, THE SCHEME WILL BE ABANDONED.
Applications and enquiries should be forwarded to:-

MISS PHYLLIS MARY HOLLINS,
105 Station Parade, Harrogate.
