Dear Jim,
I enclose herewith the invoices for Ann Mackay and Peter Donohoe for your
attention. I have asked Delma Tomlin to send you a cheque immediately after
the first concert so that you have money out of which to pay these.
If you have time you might inspect the legs of the piano later in the
festival as John Hastie said that the removers have damaged the righthand
one again.

Dear Mr Briggs,

I spoke to Raymond Fox this morning regarding ticket prices for the BMS
concerts which we are now anxious to settle and he has asked me to write
to you with our suggestions.
In 1980 the BMS Guildhall concerts were split into three price levels: 143
@ £2.50, 171 @ £2.00 and 92 @ £1.50. Raymond said that the BMS would like to
see the cost of the concerts (which I understand to be £2,400), covered by
income from a 50% house. This seems quite low, particularly with artists of
the calibre of Peter Donohoe, and we assume that if you were to attract an
audience of only that size you would expect to take up the full amount of the
Festival's guarantee against loss of £750. Working on that assumption, the
net ticket income for the three concerts would need to be £1,650 and if we
were to keep the same breakdown as in 1980, the prices would have to be £4,
£3, and £2. This seems quite high, both in relation to the 1980 prices and
to the ticket prices of similar events in 1984.
I have discussed this with Richard Gregson-Williams and we would like to
suggest that there are just two prices all the seats in the centre block
of the Guildhall being at one price and those at the sides at a lower one.
In this way the tickets could be set at £3.50 and £2.50 (inclusive of VAT)
which would bring in revenue of £570 (net of VAT) on a 50% house, i. e. £1,710
over the three concerts.
I am sending a copy of this letter to Raymond and I would be most grateful
if you could let us have your thoughts on the matter as soon as possible.
We would really like to have final confirmation of ticket prices by the end
of this week.
Yours sincerely,
Geraldine Fairfax. (Romeley

Dear Mr Briggs,
Further to your recent letter concerning the three BMS concerts
you so generously sponsored during the festival, I have spoken
to Neil Hunter, the Box Office manager, and asked him to send
you an immediate breakdown of the monies you have received to
date, and I understand this will be sent off to you this evening.
I am not yet in a position to advise you of the hire charges of
the Guildhall, piano tunings etc. but I will, of course, let you
have this information just as soon as I can.

Dear Miss Tomlin
I have to-day received from the City Treasurer a cheque for
£1814.10 in respect of the three Guildhall concerts sponsored
by us. No details were given as to how the sum was arrived
at.
When we sponsored similar concerts during the 1980 Festival
a statement was supplied to us showing box office income from
each concert and deductions made in arriving at the sum paid
over to us. Could you possibly let us have a similar note
re
our 1984 concerts please? I shall then be in a position
to claim such part of the guarantee of £750 as may be due to us.

YORK ТОЗ ОБЕ
19 July 1984
Dear Raymond
Yesterday I phoned Mr Hunter at the City Treasury as suggested by
you. He said he thought our cheque had been sent on Friday last.
He would look into the matter! In fact I received this morning
a cheque dated 18 July for £1814.10. This, together with what we
have in the BMS current account has enabled me to pay the Artists'
Fees. I have sent off appropriate cheques to-day.
There was no explanation as to how the £1814.10 was arrived at and
I have therefore written to Delma Tomlin for details so that I can
put in a claim for such part of the guarantee of £750 as may be
due to us.
Whilst writing I am enclosing further gift tokens by way of 'coda'
to your presentation. These tokens represent contributions which
I received at the AGM. I have delayed sending them to you in
case any more contributions came in but I think that we can now
regard the fund as closed. I am so pleased that the BMS has
provided you with such a worthwhile gift and hope that you will
derive much pleasure from the records.
All good wishes to you and to Barbara
Sincerely

Dear Jim,
Many thanks for your letter and I will express my appreciation
at the next committee meeting.
Obviously, you will need to know how the £1,814.10 was arrived
at, but you only want enough to make up the total to the fees don't you?
Kind regards as always.
Yours sincerely,
F. R. FOX

Dear Raymond
BMS
As arranged I enclose cheque re AGM postages 183012 = £22.88
in substitution for the cheque for £34.44 which I sent to you
a day or two ago.
As regards your letter of 7 June 1984 I have, as yet, had no
moneys from Delma Tomlin. I have looked up my papers re the
1980 Festival and I find that on that occasion I received an
advance payment out of the moneys received for our concerts by
the Festival authorities amounting to £1600. This was followed
by a balance payment at a later date.
Connie and I will be at the Concerts on 16 and 23 June but we
will be away from York from 17 to 23 June.
Sincerely
