YITKIN SEOW When Arthur Rubinstein presented Yitkin Seow with the bronze medal at the 1977 Piano Competition in Tel Aviv he hailed his performance of the Brahms Paganini Variations as the "most wonderful" he had ever heard, and with the unanimous support of the jury handed him a cheque for $1,000. This unprecedented gesture exemplifies the level of public acclaim with which Seow has been greeted at every stage of his career. Born in Singapore in 1955 Yitkin Seow was invited to study in London by Yehudi Menuhin when he was only 12 and continued his studies with Nadia Boulanger and Vlado Perlemuter. At the age of 19 he embarked upon his international career by winning the BBC Piano Competition, despite being the youngest contender. This prestigious award led to his first appearance at the Royal Festival Hall with the Philharmonia Orchestra and a televised promenade concert with the BBC Northern Symphony Orchestra. In recent years, Seow has appeared in America, Japan and Jugoslavia, at the Hong Kong Festival and at the Beethovenfest in Bonn where his performance of the Emperor concerto met with the highest critical acclaim. Yitkin Seow broadcasts frequently for the BBC and has recorded for Enigma. His concert and recital repertoire ranges from Mozart, Chopin and Brahms to Bartok, Berg and Schonberg. OPEN DA

BARI LES) WEEK m. p.m. AS Meals VANN TE) Way JULIAN LLOYD WEBBER Within the last few years the name of cellist Julian Lloyd Webber has become an established part of the musical scene both in this country and, increasingly, internationally. He performs with the country's leading orchestras - future engagements include appearances with orchestras like LPO and RPO under such conductors as Sir George Solti, and he has already made many recordings and television appearances. Indeed, his recording of the album Variations composed by his brother Andrew Lloyd Webber won a gold disc within five weeks of its release, resulting in "sell out" concerts at home and in the U.S.A. Julian Lloyd Webber began playing the cello at the age of six and won open scholarships to the Royal Academy and the Royal College of Music. At the Royal College he won the award for the most outstanding string player and was chosen to perform as soloist at a concert attended by HM The Queen Mother. His first professional engagement was at the personal suggestion of Sir Arthur Bliss when he gave the first London performance of the composer's cello concerto at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in September, 1972. In the same month he won a scholarship to study with Pierre Fournier in Geneva and returned to give concerts throughout Great Britain. His first record was released in 1974, and in January of that year he made his Royal Festival Hall debut in a performance of the Elgar concerto. Julian Lloyd Webber has already performed in many parts of the world, and his playing was recently featured on a nationwide CBS television programme in the U.S.A. In January, 1978 at the age of 26 he was appointed professor of cello at the Guildhall School of Music, London.

Sonata in C major, Opus 65 Britten (1913-1976) Britten's C major Cello Sonata was planned during a holiday in Greece during the autumn of 1960, and composed at Aldeburgh being begun in December and completed in January, 1961. The first performance was on 7 July, 1961 at the Aldeburgh Festival, in the Jubilee Hall, the players being Mstislav Rostropovich, to whom it is dedicated, with the composer at the piano. There are five movements, the third being an allegretto Scherzo-Pizzicato, which Britten described as being 'A study in pizzicato', sometimes almost guitar-like in its elaborate right-hand technique. Après un Rêve, Opus 7 No. 1 Fauré (1845-1924) The beautiful, expressive song, from which this cello and piano arrangement has been made, was composed about 1865. Sonata for Cello and Piano in G minor, Opus 19 Rachmaninov (1873-1943) By 1901 life had become almost happy for the normally pessimistic Rachmaninov. His deep depression had been cured by the treatments of the hypnotist/psychologist Dr. Nikolai Dahl, as proved by the success of the Second Piano Concerto, and the 28-year-old composer/pianist felt a new confidence in himself and his works. On top of this his cousin, the pianist Alexander Siloti, had loaned him enough money to carry on without financial worries. It was in this assurance that the Sonata for Cello and Piano, as well as the Second Suite for Two Pianos, came to life. It was written for Anatoly Brandukov, a good friend and excellent cellist, and the two men gave the first performance in Moscow in December, 1901. Working so closely with its dedicatee Rachmaninov was able to achieve almost perfect balance between the two instruments with no loss of either technical command or passionate musicianship. In mood the work is close to the Second Piano Concerto.

the the ce ma s to 1 1 NOTES by Denby Richards (Author's Copyright 1980) Tate GPROGRAMME Sonata for cello and piano in D minor Debussy (1862-1918) Throughout the First World War Debussy occupied himself with the composition of a projected set of six sonatas for various combinations of instruments. His intention was to get rid of the German influence on French music, and he signed himself 'Claude Debussy, musicien français'. He wrote of his intentions in no uncertain terms: 'Let us get back our freedom and our forms. Since we ourselves invented most of these forms, it is only right that we should preserve them. There are none more beautiful'. The six sonatas were intended to recreate the formalism and sober thinking of the 17th and 18th century French instrumental composers, although in a contemporary context. The first work was the Cello and Piano Sonata, completed in 1915. The second, for Flute, Viola and Harp, came the next year, after which Debussy started work on the third, the Violin and Piano Sonata, completed in the Spring of 1917, and first played that May in Paris, by which time Debussy was a dying man. Less than a year later he was dead, without even beginning work on any of the remaining three sonatas. As the horrors of the war came closer to Paris, Debussy confided to Leon Vallas that the sonatas were a 'secret, fervent tribute to the youth of France, mown down by the scythe of war'. They are infected by the solitary, melancholy figure of Harlequin, the cello and piano sonata even having a subtitle Pierrot faché avec la lune (Pierrot angry with the moon). The opening Prologue, only four pages in length, is full of nobility of spirit, the cello soliloquising on a constantly developing series of ideas, many no more than a brief glimpse of a thought, yet no less decisive for that. In the middle Debussy introduced a short agitated section for the cello, playing over sepulchral piano chords, providing space for the cello to resume its peroration until the final, uncanny interval of an open fifth. In the second movement Harlequin is strongly in evidence, as the cello is asked to imitate a guitar, a mandolin, a flute and, unexpectedly, a tambourine. Yet the music of this unusual Serenade has a built-in vivacity, albeit riddled through with anxiety. Finally, in music which evokes a folk-song character, Harlequin tries pathetically to become light-hearted and gay, but is interrupted by a passage marked con morbidezza, leaving us face to face with the despair and desolation of his solitude in the cello's last, hopelessly wistful largo bars.

1976) uring miber slav most ment OV 3) the the irst its en The opening movement is characterised by a simple germination idea, heard in the introduction, based on a rising semitone, which proves to be the basis for the main theme of the allegro moderato. The second subject offers new opportunities, and the development section is full of invention, culminating in a short piano cadenza, leading easily into the recapitulation of a movement which is cast squarely in the classical sonata-form mould. The second movement is a scherzo cast in ABA form, in which the nervous undercurrents of the quicksilver outer sections are tamed by the flowing melodic lines of the central part. Poetry and passion dominate the slow movement, which is the heart and soul of the sonata, while the exuberant finale, a rondo, is a hymn of triumph, with a brilliant extended coda which recalls ideas from the opening pages of the work.

LA Castle Howard, York. It may come as a surprise. If you've been thinking that Castle Howard is just another big old house, filled with dim old family portraits and tiring staircases, be encouraged. Holbein's portrait of Henry VIII sits next to his portrait of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk who escaped execution by hours because the King died first. There's only one staircase and that has a chair-lift. There is a dazzling selection of historic dress in the Costume Galleries. Then there are the rose gardens, lakes, peacocks, a glittering fountain-you know: just the way it was in the 18th century. Castle Howard is open every day from the 3rd of April to the 31st of October. Grounds and cafeteria from 11am. House and Costume Galleries 11.30am. to 5pm. All-in ticket price. Reduced rate for children 5-13, and for coach parties booked in advance. Enquiries: The Comptroller, Castle Howard Coneysthorpe 333. SCARBORO CASTLE HOWARD YORK) A64 MALTON

But the composer's own note explained why, since the work is a synthesis of quartet- writing generally, from Haydn to believe I or not - Ferneyhough. It begins with a cassette 18th-century recording of music, and equally draws inspiration from - with quotes Mozart's "Dissonance" Quartet, K465. But Fox's own ideas linger in the mind: those slow, siren- like glissandi (derived from Bartok), and especially the persistent, tolling, single note which dominates the Quar- tet's second section and around which numerous inventions to be discerned. are The work was played by the Alberni Quartet, to whom it is dedicated, and who are corporately related, through the marriage of their cellist David Smith, to the pianist Jennifer Partridge, widely known as the platform accompanist of her brother, the tenor, Ian Partridge. So here was an ideal occa- sion, too, for a performance of Vaughan Williams's "On Wenlock Edge" cycle in its version for piano and strings. It is not the version I most prefer, the strings really adding little of significance to the piano-writing, and in this instance actually impairing, in a dull acoustic, Mr. Par- tridge's fine reputation for clear enunciation of words. With no dais provided for the performers, it was as American 0. His singing for once had a somewhat hooded, slightly edgy tone, though the inter- pretation of songs where the music is more important than Housman's cynical verses (I find them more than merely pessimistic) was, as always, impeccable. The other work in the programme, since the oppor- tunity was not to be missed, was Elgar's A minor Quintet for piano and strings, Op. 84, a revival worth having once in a while if only for the profound beauty of the cen- tral Adagio. ERNEST BRADBURY York Minster: Halle Orchestra, Huddersfield Choral Society with Black Dyke Mills Band. THE evening sun filtered through the Minster's great West window illuminating the saints frozen in their coloured glass. At one point it seemed that even they might join in the great paean of praise which so sensationally crowns Walton's "Belshazzar's Feast." Certainly one could hardly hope to hear a more jubilant sound for a festival concert than a finely drilled chorus symphony orchestra and augmented by a brass band making "a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob." The idea of a programme featuring two masterworks of 20th Century romanticism - the Walton and Elgar's First Symphony in one of England's greatest churches was clearly a good one to round off the three-week fes- tival on Friday night, and it drew a capacity audience. If they had come to listen to music clear in every detail they would, of course, have been disappointed: the Min- ster is not well disposed to clarity of sound. It is, however, magnificent in producing what the Ameri- b for Minist technical-ley reached Foreign Sec ing here on ing a NATO ference last w cans might cal experience.
