The BMS is not just an organisation promoting concerts, but a society with a large and friendly membership. For a £20.00 season ticket subscribers are offered not only six concerts for the price of four, but a place in the society and an opportunity to participate in its decisions and social gatherings. Subscribe NOW and join us for our first concert on Thursday 18th October. OTHER CONCERTS AT THE SIR JACK LYONS CONCERT HALL The Department of Music of the University promotes a series of public concerts, every Wednesday during term time at 8.00 p.m. These feature the remarkable talent of the University's own students alongside a rich and impressive diversity of professional musicians. Highlights this season include performances by lan Partridge; the pianist William Howard; a two-harpsichord recital by Ton Koopman and Tini Mathot; the Israel Piano Trio; and a Mozart Festival commemorating the bicentenary of the composer's death. A new quartet, the Sorrel String Quartet, takes up residence. BMS members may recall their stunning performance of the Mendelssohn Octet with the Simon Quartet last year. University ensembles, Choir and Orchestra perform works ranging from the Spanish Renaissance to Big Band swing numbers, Elgar's 'Cello Concerto and Mozart's arrangement of Handel's Messiah. Full details are available from the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall Box Office, Department of Music, University of York, Heslington, York YO1 5DD, Tel: 0904-432439 or 432447. THE BRITISH MUSIC SOCIETY OF YORK The BMS is one of many similar voluntary organisations throughout the country, 14 in Yorkshire alone, whose prime purpose is to promote chamber music recitals by musicians of the highest calibre. The concerts have been described as "amongst the most exciting contributions to the musical life of the city." Our forthcoming concert season will be the 70th in succession. The quotations given below are from reviews given in the Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Press during our last season. Vanbrugh String Quartet "...captured to perfection the autumnal felicities of Mozart's K.428. Its expressive features, disciplined yet heartfelt, were enunciated with tonal warmth and faultless intonation." (D.W., YP) Joachim Piano Trio "Rebecca Clarke's Trio of 1921 evoked by far the greatest range of interpretation.... The Joachim gave it their soul, and it showed." (Martin Dreyer, YEP) Arienski Ensemble "... the music was allowed to breathe every drop of its fragrance. The conclusion was greeted with thunderous silence, the ultimate respect an audience can deliver." (Martin Dreyer, YEP) Coull String Quartet "Shostakovich's Quartet No. 8 ... was played with conviction and strong but disciplined emotion." (Charles Hunt, YEP) Murray McLachlan "Schubert's Wanderer Fantasy... was so much more than an essay in Bravura. It showed McLachlan, 24, as one of the outstanding contemporary British pianists in both technique and insight." She has only recently begun to appear beyond what is left of the Iron Curtain, but her playing has always excited enthusiastic critical response. Miss Dimitrova's recital for us opens with the most demanding and perhaps the finest of Bach's key- board partitas and closes with Chopin's magis- terial Third Sonata. She also plays three pieces from Ravel's richly evocative Miroirs - the haunt- ing Oiseaux tristes, the undulating Une barque sur l'ocean and one of the composer's most brilliant and colourful essays in the Spanish style, Alborado del gracioso. Their programme reflects the group's wide-ranging tastes and untiring championship of 20th-century British music. The Third Quartet, composed between 1925 and 1927, represented a profound change in Frank Bridge's compositional style and shows affinities with Berg's Lyric Suite. Shostakovich's Fifth Quartet, written in the darkness of the late Stalin years, is a heady mixture of lyricism, passion and irony, with many pre-echoes of the Tenth Sym- phony. They come to us in the form of an oboe quartet and in a nicely counterpoised programme perform two oboe quartets and two string trios. Two works, one of each kind, are by living composers; the others are by Mozart, the bi- centenary of whose death falls this December. The light-sounding title Divertimento disguises one of Mozart's most substantial and finest chamber works. Alfred Schnittke is at the forefront of the Soviet avant-garde; in his delightfully eclectic music, works for stringed instruments figure prominently.
