Their programme includes one of Mendelssohn's most delightful quartets and Tchaikovsky's third quartet, which he wrote in memory of the violinist Ferdinand Laub. 8.00 Thursday 16th March 1989 BENJAMIN FRITH and PETER HILL (piano duet) Sonata in F, K.497 Epigraphes antiques Fantasy in F minor, Op. 103 The Rite of Spring Mozart Debussy Schubert Stravinsky Benjamin Frith is another NFMS prizewinner it will be a pleasure to welcome back, and since he last played for us four years ago he has added victory at the Busoni International Piano Competition to his bag. Like Benjamin Frith a Yorkshire resident, Peter Hill is a lecturer at Sheffield University, well known as solo pianist and accompanist. If the raison d'être of this programme is Stravinsky's own piano-duet version of The Rite of Spring, the rest of the programe contains, besides a rarity by Debussy, two masterpieces of this medium. 70 THE BRITISH MUSIC SOCIETY OF YORK The B.M.S. is one of many similar voluntary organisations throughout the country - sixteen in Yorkshire alone whose prime purpose is to promote PROFESSIONAL CHAMBER MUSIC RECITALS. The forthcoming season will be the sixty-eighth in succession to be given in York under the name of the British Music Society.
