ANTHONY GOLDSTONE studied with Derrick
Wyndham at the then Royal Manchester College of
Music, and later in London with Maria Curcio who
instilled in him the traditions of her own teacher Artur
Schnabel, for whom Anthony Goldstone has particular
admiration. He first came to prominence as a result of
winning international prizes in Munich and Vienna, and a
Gulbenkian Fellowship; he first played for this Society in
1973. Since then he has developed his career, unusually,
on two fronts: as a solo pianist and in chamber music, in
particular with his own Musicians of the Royal Exchange
who gave us such a memorable concert last season.

Music in Manchester and on to win the Benson and

American Music Competition in New York in 1982.
ROGER VIGNOLES also studied at Cambridge, since
when he has very rapidly become one of our
internationally best known piano accompanists.

she was one of the prizewinners in the Tunbridge Wells

the Young Concert Artists Trust management scheme;

appearance in York.

Until a few years ago a foreign string quartet was a
regular feature of the Society's programme, none more
regular than the NEW BUDAPEST who played for us in
1974, 1975 and 1977. All the more welcome they are then
in our Hungarian year, even though only Andras Kiss
remains from the original line-up. The Quartet was
formed in 1970; in 1972 they were able to study in the
United States with the legendary Hungarian Quartet at
the last of its summer master classes. Andras Kiss and
László Bársony are both professors at the Ferenc Liszt
Academy of Music in Budapest.

Through the generosity of the Radcliffe and Edward
Boyle Memorial trusts we are once again able to borrow
the ALLEGRI from a period of residency at Leeds
University. After nearly a third of a century they have built
up a vast repertoire stretching from Haydn to
contemporary works. On record their Schubert playing
has been particularly admired.

IAN BROWN studied the piano at the Royal College of
Music with Lamar Crowson and Eric Harrison, winning
the Tagore Gold Medal given to the most distinguished
student of the year; a further year of study was spent in
Israel with Enrique Barenboim. That we know him best
as an accompanist and chamber music player probably
reflects his very wide experience of music -as a
choirboy in Salisbury Cathedral, as a bassoonist in the
National Youth Orchestra, even occasionally as a
conductor. Recently he has been developing his work as
a soloist, including broadcast recitals; we look forward to
welcoming him back to York in this, for us, new rôle.

A Letter From The Chairman
This is the sixty-sixth consecutive year in which the British
Music Society of York has offered a season of PROFESSIONAL
CHAMBER MUSIC RECITALS. The word "recital" was first
used, it seems, to describe a concert given in London in 1840 by
FERENC LISZT (1811-1886), and the HUNGARIAN THEME
that runs through our programmes this season has been
chosen to mark the double anniversary of the composer-
pianist often described as "the father of modern music". Fellow
Hungarians represented, in between the more familiar BACH,
BEETHOVEN and BRAHMS are Dohnányi, Bartók, Kodály and
Seiber. Our artists, as usual, include old friends - our two
pianists and our two string quartets-and new-the young
'cellist Jane Salmon giving an unaccompanied recital, and the
outstanding duo of Henry Herford and Roger Vignoles.
I do hope you will not be satisfied by coming to the occasional
concert, but will want to SUBSCRIBE, that is to become a
member of the Society. The BMS is one of many similar
voluntary organisations throughout the country-sixteen in
Yorkshire alone-whose prime purpose is to promote
PROFESSIONAL CHAMBER MUSIC RECITALS. By
subscribing you begin to play a part in the running of the
Society; and you SAVE ABOUT A THIRD OF THE COST OF
YOUR TICKETS!
