PIANOFORTE RECITAL by
PATRICIA BISHOP
PATRICIA BISHOP was born in 1933 and began her piano studies at the
age of eight. She won an Open Scholarship to the Royal College of Music
when she was fifteen and studied there for five years with Angus Morrison.
During that time she was awarded, in 1952, the Hopkinson Gold M lal and
Norris Prize, and in 1954 the Dannreuther Prize for the best concerto
performance of the year.
At the age of twenty she won the Queen's Prize for Pianists (a competition
open to any British subject under thirty), and was awarded the Silver Medal
of the Worshipful Company of Musicians.
2.
Patricia Bishop has broadcast since 1952, has given recitals all over the
country, and has toured Western Germany. She appeared before Her Majesty
the Queen at the Royal Concert, 1955.
THURSDAY EVENING, 18th OCTOBER, 1956, at 7-30 p.m.

RECITAL by
THE BRAIN-POUGNET-PARRY TRIO
JEAN POUGNET-Violin
DENNIS BRAIN-Horn
WILFRID PARRY-Pianoforte
DENNIS BRAIN was born on 17th May, 1921, and was educated at
St. Paul's and the Royal Academy of Music. He studied horn playing under
his father, Aubrey Brain, a most distinguished performer, and took organ
lessons from G. D. Cunningham.
Regarded as the leading exponent of his instrument, he has had works
specially written for him by Benjamin Britten, Hindemith, Matyas Seiber
and Gordon Bryan.
JEAN POUGNET was born of a musical family, and received his first violin
lessons from his sister at the age of five. Three years later he was accepted
as a pupil by Rowsby Woof, Professor at the Royal Academy of Music. At
the age of eleven he won the Ada Lewis Scholarship and entered the Royal
Academy of Music, where he studied for seven years, winning two further
scholarships. His first recital at the Wigmore Hall was given when he was
fifteen, and the following year he made his first appearance in a Promenade
Concert.
His wide experience ranges from light music to concertos. He formed the
London String Trio with William Primrose and Anthony Pini. In 1942 he

RECITAL by
THE NEW EDINBURGH QUARTET
ROBERT COOPER-Violin
ANNE CROWDEN-Violin
(with second 'cello)
THE NEW EDINBURGH QUARTET was founded during 1953 as a result
of an invitation made to its four members by the Trustees of the Reid
Orchestra Endowment Fund upon terms which enable them to make
Edinburgh their base and to devote a large proportion of their time to the
rehearsal and performance of string quartets.
CHRISTOPHER MARTIN-Viola
JOAN DICKSON-'Cello
The Quartet gave its first performance in 1953 at one of the Edinburgh
University Chamber Concerts. Concerts in England and Northern Ireland
followed and since 1954 the Quartet has frequently broadcast.
In its second season the Quartet toured England three times and played at
the Edinburgh Festival. It visited Denmark and broadcast for the Danish
Radio.
7.
Its engagements during the season 1955/56 have included a recital in the
Wigmore Hall for the Anglo-German Society and three concerts for the
McEwan Festival in Glasgow.
It was invited to play Dohnanyi's Pianoforte Quintet with the composer at
the Edinburgh Festival in August, 1956.
THURSDAY EVENING, 14th MARCH, 1957, at 7-30 p.m.
in the TEMPEST ANDERSON HALL (Museum Gardens).
RECITAL by
THE DELLER
Me Loughlin.
EILEEN MCLOUGHLIN Soprano
ALFRED DELLER-Counter Tenor
CONSORT
GERALD ENGLISH-Tenor
MAURICE BEVAN-Bass
Accompanied by DESMOND DUPRE-Lute
ALFRED DELLER was born in 1912 at Margate, Kent, where he made
a reputation as a boy soprano. He did not have the usual rest period
during adolescence, finding it natural and easy to sing in the alto register.
He has held appointments in the choirs of Canterbury and St. Paul's
Cathedrals, has made many recordings, and has broadcast frequently. He
has made many successful appearances on the Continent.
Michael Tippett comments on the counter-tenor voice: "To my ear, it has
a peculiarly musical sound, because almost no emotional irrelevancies distract
us from the absolutely pure quality of the production. It is like no other
sound in music and few other musical sounds are so intrinsically musical".
EILEEN MCLOUGHLIN is known to the members of this Society through
her excellent performance last season in collaboration with Julian Bream."
GERALD ENGLISH and MAURICE BEVAN hold appointments at St.
Paul's Cathedral. The latter has been heard in York Minster, where he has
sung in the Matthew Passion.
The singing of the Ensemble has been compared with a string quartet for its
balance and excellence of phrasing. It has earned the highest praise for its
clear enunciation, and an interpretation of the works of the Elizabethans
approaching perfection.

became leader of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, subsequently resigning
in 1945 and devoting his attention to solo performances and chamber music.
WILFRID PARRY, now a familiar and popular figure at B.M.S. concerts,
studied at Trinity College of Music, where he held the Bambridge Piano
Scholarship, won the Chappell Gold Medal and was awarded a Fellowship
of the College.
He has been a regular broadcaster since 1929, and is well-known as a member
of this Trio, the Zephyr Trio, the Camden Trio, the Wigmore Ensemble,
and as an associate of Jean Pougnet and Anthony Pini in the performance
of sonatas.

the international Concours of Musical Execution he again took first place.
He has frequently appeared as a soloist in Swiss musical centres, both in

their early resolve. So long an association of the SAME four players in the
study of Quartet playing and of this only-is probably unique in the history
of music, and accompanied by musical intelligence and virtuosity is responsible
for the well-deserved reputation the Quartet has gained as being one of the
finest in the world.
The Quartet have taken up permanent residence at the University of
California in a teaching capacity.

COMPOSERS IN CAMEO
JOAN TAYLOR-Soprano
NONA LIDDELL-Violin
DAPHNE IBBOTT-Piano
JOAN TAYLOR intended at first to be a pianist and as a child studied
under Coviello, later continuing her studies under him at the Royal Academy
of Music, of which she is now an Associate.
She was found to possess a soprano voice of exceptional promise, and after
training under Thomas Meux she completed her studies under Roy Henderson.
Whilst at the Royal Academy she became the first singer ever to be awarded
the Beethoven Scholarship-judged on that occasion by the composer, Nicholas
Medtner-and in addition won every other prize open to a soprano. Further
honour was the winning of the gold medal presented annually to the best
sub-professor in any subject.
She has appeared as soloist in most standard choral works with the leading
choral societies under Sir John Barbirolli, Sir Adrian Boult, Sir Malcolm
Sargent and other conductors of repute. Her repertoire includes German
Lieder, early Italian songs and works by modern French and British composers.
She has been a frequent broadcaster.
NONA LIDDELL won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music when
sixteen. During four years at the Academy she was awarded many prizes,
including the Worshipful Company of Musicians' Medal for "the most
distinguished student at the R.A.M.", awarded every three years.
When just twenty, she made her début at the Promenade Concerts, and has
since performed with many of the country's leading orchestras, besides giving
recitals and broadcasting.
DAPHNE IBBOTT also won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music,
where she won many prizes. She appeared at the National Gallery Concerts
during the war and has since appeared at numerous music clubs as soloist and
accompanist to many eminent artists. In 1949 she toured Denmark for the
