PETER GELLHORN has lived in this country since 1935 and established a name as a conductor and pianist. Before the war he was Musical Director at Toynbee Hall, has since been a conductor with the Sadler's Wells, Carl Rosa and Covent Garden Companies, and joined the Glyndebourne in 1954. He has also appeared on innumerable occasions as a pianist in England and abroad. HAROLD CLARKE has been for some years the principal flautist at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and is well known to radio listeners both as a soloist and for his work as an ensemble player. He has discovered and introduced many rare works and his constant aim is to present music of general interest to his audience. JOY HALL, who was the first 'cellist to win the International Bach and Beethoven scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music, studied with Casals in France. She is a prominent member of the Jacques, Haydn and Golds- borough chamber orchestras and has become widely known and appreciated throughout the country as a soloist and a polished performer in ensemble works. 3. THURSDAY EVENING, 10th NOVEMBER, 1955, at 7-30 p.m. in the TEMPEST ANDERSON HALL (Museum Gardens). PIANOFORTE RECITAL by DENIS MATTHEWS DENIS MATTHEWS was born in Coventry in 1919. On the advice of Harold Craxton, with whom he subsequently studied, he entered the Royal Academy of Music at the age of sixteen as Thalberg Scholar. He worked at composition with William Alwyn, winning the Blumenthal Composition Scholarship; but, although he had some works performed and published, his interests in the classics led him to devote more and more time to piano playing. He played Beethoven's C minor concerto with Sir Henry Wood at an Academy Queen's Hall concert in 1938, and made his London debut in November, 1939, in a recital at one of Dame Myra Hess's National Gallery Concerts. During his studentship he won many awards, including the Worshipful Company of Musicians' Medal, given triennially to "the most distinguished student" in the Academy. He joined the R.A.F. in 1940 and gave hundreds of concerts to troops, frequently with the Griller Quartet. He toured the United States and visited Germany as solo pianist with the R.A.F. Symphony Orchestra in 1944-45. Since the war his reputation as a concert-pianist has steadily increased. In 1945 he played twice for the Royal Philharmonic Society, with Barbirolli and Beecham, and he has been a regular soloist at the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts in London. He played Mozart's last concerto with the Halle Orchestra at the Belgian International Festival in Knocke (1949), the whole of "The Well-Tempered Clavier" at the Vienna Bach Festival in 1950, visited the Bahamas and Canada in 1951, and South Africa in 1953 and 1954. 4. 4. THURSDAY EVENING, 1st DECEMBER, 1955, at 7-30 p.m. in the TEMPEST ANDERSON HALL (Museum Gardens). RECITAL by THE RUBBRA-GRUENBERG-PLEETH TRIO EDMUND RUBBRA-Pianist ERICH GRUENBERG-Violinist WILLIAM PLEETH-'Cellist EDMUND RUBBRA was born in Northampton in 1901. He has written many choral and orchestral works, including five symphonies and chamber music. Although so well known as one of the leading composers he has gained a wide reputation as a fine pianist. He was appointed Lecturer to the Faculty of Music, Oxford University, in 1947, and in 1949 was honoured with a Doctorate of Music, Durham University. 5. ERICH GRUENBERG was born in Vienna in 1924, and studied first in his native city under the celebrated leader of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Stwertka. He made his London debut in an outstanding performance of the Brahms Violin Concerto, given at the Royal Albert Hall with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Eduard van Beinum-subsequently appearing in broadcast and public recitals throughout the country, and as soloist with many of the leading British orchestras. In August, 1950, he was invited to lead the Blech Quartet, now known as the New London Quartet. WILLIAM PLEETH was born in London in 1916 and at the age of 13 won a scholarship to the Leipzig Conservatoire, and studied with JULIUS KLENGEL. He played with the Gewandhaus Orchestra under BRUNO WALTER, and was the only 'cellist besides FEUERMANN to gain this distinction at an early age. He gave his first recital and first broadcast in London in 1933. William Pleeth has appeared frequently as soloist with many distinguished conductors, both British and Foreign. He is Professor of 'cello and chamber music at the Guildhall School of Music, and has recently been awarded an honorary Fellowship of that Institution. THURSDAY EVENING, 23rd FEBRUARY, 1956, at 7-30 p.m. in the TEMPEST ANDERSON HALL (Museum Gardens). CHAMBER CONCERT by THE AMADEUS STRING QUARTET NORBERT BRAININ SIEGMUND NISSEL Violinists PETER SCHIDLOF-Viola MARTIN LOVETT-'Cellist The Amadeus String Quartet was founded as a professional ensemble in 1947 after many years of playing chamber music together during their common years of study. They gave their first recital at the Wigmore Hall, London, in January, 1948, and have since been in great demand by Music Societies in Great Britain as well as for broadcasting. All the members of the Quartet are in their twenties. They have successfully toured Europe, visiting the principal towns and Radio Stations in Holland, Belgium, France, Germany and Spain, and have been engaged for return visits to most countries of Europe. They appeared at a number of Festivals during the Festival of Britain and abroad, including the Edinburgh and Holland Festivals of 1951. It is a point of interest that this was the first Quartet to give a concert in the new Royal Festival Hall in London, which proved to have excellent acoustics for this type of music and the concert drew an audience of approximately 2,000."
